The unofficial poet laureate of Harlem, Langston Hughes derived great inspiration from the everyday scenes and sounds of his surroundings. He was especially inspired by jazz and blues, spending hours in the nightclubs of Harlem and Washington, D.C., listening and writing. “I tried to write poems like the songs they sang on Seventh Street,” he said of his verse. This influence is apparent in much of his work and can be seen clearly in such poems as "The Weary Blues," "Jazzonia," "Harlem Night Club," "The South," and Montage of a Dream Deferred, a book-length suite of poems illustrating Harlem life.

In 1958, Hughes crossed into the jazz world by reading his work at the landmark Village Vanguard in New York City, accompanied by Charles Mingus and Phineas Newborn (NOTE: Phineas Newborn is NOT credited on the cover of the album, presumably for contractual reasons: he was an Atlantic artist at the time this album was recorded – op.ed). The collaboration eventually resulted in the album The Weary Blues, which united Hughes’s voice and words with the music of Leonard Feather and Mingus. The first half of the album is conducted by Feather and features a traditional blues and gospel sound, while the latter half, with Mingus and his band, provides an organic jazzy groove for the poet's mellifluous voice to ride upon

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID)

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
