LARRY LUREX "I Can Hear Music" b/w "Going Back" (AN-204)
You are bidding on a used, rare Larry Lurex single on Anthem (AN-204) "I Can Hear Music" b/w "Going Back" released in 1973. I'm sure most hardcore Queen collectors know the story of this 45 but for those fans that don't, here's a description of it from Wikipedia:
Larry Lurex was the artist name used for a musical project by Trident Studios' house engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable, in 1972. The name is a pun on the moniker of glam rock star Gary Glitter. Cable was experimenting with re-creating the "Wall of Sound" style favoured by Phil Spector. He recorded cover versions of the following two songs:
- "I Can Hear Music" (written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector, which had been a hit for The Ronettes and The Beach Boys)
- "Going Back" (written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, which had been a hit for Dusty Springfield)
The tracks were released as a 7" vinyl single on EMI (and Anthem) in 1973, but did not enter the charts. This pre-dated the release of the first Queen album.
A little more Internet research on my part uncovered that there are DJ copies of the 45 floating around which, supposedly, are not as rare or collectible as this particular record. This is a STORE COPY -- NOT A DJ COPY! -- which has the B-side "Going Back." Also, "these pressings were done on cheap material and poor mastering. You need to use extra grams to make it track better."
I bought this Larry Lurex 45 I'm selling back in '77 or '78. Even then it was quite collectible and I paid something like $15 or $20 for it which was a lot of money for this teenager, at the time, to pay. But I wasn't disappointed with the 45 as I liked both sides and the record itself looked and, most importantly, sounded great. It's also important to note that I've never played the record just to listen to it. That is, I understood its collectibility back then so upon purchasing the 45, I immediately recorded it onto cassette tape and listened to it that way. Thus, it's been virtually unplayed and safely stored away for about 30 years. The record is in essentially the same condition now as the day I bought it. I would like to state that I do not sell vinyl records as a business so it's difficult for me to grade it. I'd have to say it's at least in VG condition, if not better. I've included actual scans of both labels.
