Latch On
Hey! Didn't Eddie Cochran do "Latch On" back in the Cochran Brothers days? Here's where Cochran learned the song, and an unlikely tale of "Latch On" and Ron Hargrave, budding rockabilly star.
Ron was born in 1930 to a family of vaudeville performers. They moved from New York to California in '36 and once he was out of high school (apx. 1947) he started looking around for some work around the film lots. He played some bit parts in a few movies and TV shows but in a backwards quirk of fate, his break came by being drafted!
In the service, he met Lou Costello (Abbott & Costello) who became his manager. One of the first roles he landed after being discharged was in the 1955 Abbott & Costello film 'Dance With Me Henry.' He was cast to play the teenage hipster Ernie, who sings rock & roll while playing a ukulele (!?).
Another thing that Costello got for Hargrave was a contract' with MGM Records. He cut a few singles, some of which are pretty fair rockabilly sides. This 45 of "Latch On" is the best of the lot, with a boppin' vocal and strong guitar break.
The song "Latch On" is flipped here with "Only A Daydream."
His other big break of note, was writing the song "High School Confidential" which was filming at MGM. Jerry Lee Lewis cut the single and Hargrave even went out on tour with The Killer in the aftermath. Weird world, eh?
