Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a few mostly light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area, this beautiful classic album appears hardly played.

Brief Info: The third album by one of America’s greatest singer-songwriters and vocalists. Her first was on Verve, then she signed to CBS. Blending pop with jazz and soul, her music is not overly commercial, but one of the most compelling singers of her generation. Her full-on vocal style at times takes the breath away, the songs are complex and intense about love and romance, this being even darker than the previous album. It is considered the second of a trilogy – the other two albums are also on offer from the same collection and are equally compelling and brilliant. Over the years her music has gained a huge reputation and many regard this album as one of her very finest (this being my personal favourite) – all her early titles are amazing. Other artists have covered her work and attracted many admirers and fans, her music and vocal just exudes class. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 fifteen years after her untimely death in 1997. This a superb hardly played UK original and seldom seen like this.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format. The front fragile being single thickness card, the entrance area via the centrefold into the back. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Group, includes the Andy Williams promotional CBS inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Being a very dark unprotected cover with single thickness card on the front and spine, avoiding rubbing on the top spine fold is very difficult as few will ever remain totally upright. So this edge has rubbed, but there is little other rubbing on this uncompromising UK-made sleeve. A little near the bottom edge only and any creasing minimal and very light. The lack of ring marks or sticker issues both major pluses.

Cover Back: A little rubbing on the spine fold, but little else in terms of rubbing. The fragile card has a little natural waviness, but relatively minor – no liquid has ever come into contact with this and the actual surface is hardly worn at all, it being clean and fresh with no ugly ring wear.

Cover Inside: A little light creasing near the central entrance, but no splits or tears. With a thick over 160 gram record inside for best part of 50 years, this has fared very well with little else to fault.

Top Edges: Straight and flush with any thickening to the thin card only light and quite patchy.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above with a little more thickening due to being the storage edges, however, still generally neat and few will have much less wear than this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still sharp with barely any thickening or wear.

Spine and Text: Fragile and thin, so this has flattened, but remains uncompressed with any wear largely confined to the actual thin folds. The main surface has little wear and all the text is present and strong as-seen.

Corners: Some tip rubbing which is predictable and so hard to avoid on a cover like this. But most only relatively small and quite light. Fine, very fine to excellent shape retained with the right ones the best.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce and delicate late 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This splendid item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined CBS Andy Williams promotional inner in lovely condition. Minimal creasing and all edges soundly and naturally intact. The paper remains fresh and clean.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played from a high-quality clean collection with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a gorgeous record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This top-quality classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure, and this does have some quiet passages. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been quite well stored and the record certainly carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
