Having previously recorded with The Oxfords and The Rugbys, in 1971 singer/guitarist Steve McNicol formed Lazarus. Signed by Shelby Singleton's Amazon label, the band's self-titled debut "Lazarus" made for an interesting, if frustrating effort. Abandoning his earlier blue-eyed soul attack, material such as 'You've Got To Get Ahead', 'Faces of Tomorrow' and 'Back In the City' offered up an odd blend of conventional MOR pop, lite psych and BS&T-styled horns ('Desire'). On paper the combination probably doesn't sound all that appealing, but to be honest the results aren't half bad (imagine 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' era Tommy James mixed with early BS&T). McNicol's voice was attractive and the majority of the Raymond Cichon-penned material was catchy enough to warrant at least a quick spin. That didn't do anything for sales, the set quickly vanishing into cutout bins.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
