Columbia Masterworks LP : Leonard Bernstein -- conductor/ The New York Philharmonic -- (1959) - Columbia MS 6080 Modest Mussorgsky - 'Pictures At An Exhibition' / Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - 'Capriccio Espangnol'.
Cover is in quite good condition, with an odd factory overlap at the bottom of the back side (see picture). The record itself is without blemish, and it does indeed deliver the Masterworks quality sound that Columbia bragged about for years.
*** Of course, this is the orchestral version of the Mussorgsky piece (transcription by Maurice Ravel!) which is not to be confused with the composer's original composition, for solo piano.
One of the best things about this record is the cover photo - it is SO New-York-City-1959 that it gives me Edsel flashbacks. Also, the write-up on the cover's flip side giving background history on the Mussorgsky piece is well told.
Not for nothing, Bernstein was on top of the world during this time, and on top of his game. His renditions of certain composers, particularly the Russians, were, and still are, recognized as the very best. (But it sure helped to have the finest symphony orchestra in the business under his baton...)
A suggestion : if you take a pass on this version, you might consider the 1975 recording by the brilliant and underrated Leonard Slatkin, who time and again worked under-funded miracles with the likewise underrated St. Louis Symphony. It's the only other recording of this piece in the same league as Bernstein's. But I myself don't have a copy of that up for sale.
