Description

Truscalina Brown (Joseph E. Sullivan)

Silas Leachman, bar; Chimes and piano acc.  Self-announced

Victor 1132 (s/s 10” 78 rpm acoustic record) Recorded Philadelphia, Dec 6, 1901, pre-matrix.  First “dog” label.  No “Patented” under the spindle hole.

V+.   A bit noisy at start, 3 scratches which sound 3 or 4 times and one brief needle drop.  After adjusting the equalization and using a 3.25 mil elliptical truncated stylus, it sounds fine and clear with remarkable presence for 1901.

Pre-matrix.  Recorded when a single metal part, when worn out, meant the take had to be retired.  According to Fagan and Moran’s Enyclopedic Discography covering the pre-matrix period, this one, misdated there as recorded Dec 6, 1902, was never released, only take -2 made the same day.  This is corrected in DAHR but they give no sales figures and list both takes as having been issued.

Shipping is $ 4.00 to the U.S; elsewhere it’s calculated by the delivery address
