OK, picture this: the year is 1979. You are, say, 16 years of age. You had  just ordered a copy of one of the Led Zeppelin albums you’d never heard before – Houses of the Holy - from the Columbia Record Club in Terre Haute, Indiana.

A few days later, the mailman drops by and delivers your order (undamaged! – remember, the year is 1979, not 2009, so USPS was still hiring some normal people). You impatiently tear the wrapper apart, pull the album out; your hands are trembling in anticipation as you hungrily devirginize the shrink wrap.

Then you open the gatefold album, and then:

BANG!!!

It suddenly hits you! As you open the gatefold, you realize that your favorite band, the Guardians of Heavy Metal, the Gurus of Guitar Riff, the Gods of Thunder, are doing a song called (yikes!) “ Burn that DISCO out” and another one titled “Get on the (dance) floor”.

IT’S OVER!. IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD. THE LED ZEP HAS BECOME A (GASP!!!) DISCO BAND!! MOVE OVER, BONEY M., HERE COMES LED ZEPPELIN.!!  BEAT IT, GLORIA GAYNOR, MAKE WAY FOR ROBERT PLANT!! SCRAM JOHN TRAVOLTA, HEEEEERE’S JOHN BOHNAM!

EEEEIIIIAAAOOOWWW!!!

You go to the kitchen,  open the owen and, in utter desperation, make your final preparations for the quick exit from this world. Life without Led Zeppelin has no meaning…a primal scream leaves your body…UUUURGHHHH!!!!!!!

Then you take a plaintive final look at the record which fell to the floor and you realize something strange. There is NO “Burn that Disco Down” on the record label.

Um..WTF?!?!?!?! …you think to yourself… 

You flip the record and – guess what? – there is no “Get on the floor”, either.

A WTF moment #1 is quickly followed by WTF moment #2, then #3 and #4..

You go back to the cover, do a double take, and then it hits you again! The liner notes and track listings on the inside gatefold are FOR THE WRONG ALBUM!!!’ The liner notes and track listings for the Zeppelin album are taken from – GASP!!! – Michael Jackson’s  “Off the Wall” album!. It’s a total COMMUNICATIONS BREAKDOWN!!!

Life returns to your body, blood flows back to your brain. It’s not the end of the world!! Led Zeppelin have not capitulated to Disco, after all!!!  Whole Lotta Joy!!!  You are on a Stairway to Heavens  in an instant!!! Yeee-hawww!!!

Yes, folks, that’s could have been a bizarre story of this even more bizarre Columbia Record Club mispressing which couples the front and the back (and the record) of the Led Zeppelin’s fifth album with the foldout liner notes for Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking 1979 ‘Off the Wall’ album.  A more bizarre mismatch – short of mismatching Marilyn Manson with Barbra Streisand’s Greatest Hits - not even makers of Frankenstein could not come up with.  Here is an album cover that is truly a  hybrid zombie mutant from Hell !

Obviously, Columbia Record Club did some “creative” cover assembly and mismatched the covers belonging to two non-Columbia artists: Atlantic’s Led Zeppelin and Epic’s Michael Jackson.  Call it a blunder of EPIC proportions, if you will.

How many copies like this exist? God knows. This is the only one we’ve seen thus far and it is very likely that this is a lone, one-of-a-kind, specimen.  We’d be willing to bet that  Columbia caught the error fairly early on and stopped the presses before more ridiculous Michael “Zeppelin” Jackson copies were shipped to the customers.

In short, if you are looking for a real one-of-a-kind Led Zeppelin (or, for that matter, Michael Jackson)  curiosity, seek no further. To paraphrase the title of the Michael Jackson’s final hit: THIS IS IT.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.

(b)          The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(c)             The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its front side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
