Description

LED ZEPPELIN II A2 / B2 Atlantic 58818 UK 1969 RED/PLUM Label
This rare second pressing on the red/plum label has 'The Lemon Song' credit on the label as well as on the cover of course.  This is before later pressings replaced it with 'The Killing Floor' on the label and for this reason this pressing is highly collectible.
The record has the Jimmy Page production credit on both the label and gatefold and Peter Grant as the Executive Producer on the gatefold only.

Visual grading
The vinyl is exceptionally clean and there is only one obvious faint hairline on Side Two and no other marks at all.  It retains a lovely glossy sheen and whilst it has been played there is not a lot of spindle wear.  Visually it is in superb condition so it is a surprise in a way that there is some crackle as detailed below.
Play grading
Prior to 'Whole Lotta Love' starting there is some lead in crackle.  This classic track then plays very well with only light crackle obvious in the quieter section near the end.  The first instrumental section actually plays very clearly with minimal 'background'.  There is a small skip on the 3/4 point but is not that noticeable.  The quiet intro to 'What is and What Should Never Be' plays very 'cleanly' with only a hint of static.  As per the first track there are no clicks or pops and the remainder of the track plays with very well but with some light crackle in the quieter sections again.  'The Lemon Song' continues in the same way with the louder sections playing extremely well but with the quieter sections displaying some crackle again.  In saying that it is not particularly intrusive and for a rare pressing the audio is more than acceptable and some would say it even adds to the atmosphere!  'Thank You' plays in exactly the same way but is still an excellent listen.  The crackle is a little more obvious in the quieter sections here.
The classic 'Heart Breaker' has some heavy lead in crackle but once Jimmy 'kicks in' the sound plays loud and clear with very little interference although there are a couple of light skips near the beginning.  The remainder of the track plays very well with a hint of distortion on the top end and some light crackle in the less 'heavy' parts again.  'Livin' Lovin Maid' has excellent audio and plays with much greater clarity and is a fabulous listen and easily grades as Ex+.  Practically zero distortion also which is rare.  The intro on 'Ramble On' plays with superb audio and the rest of the track does not disappoint either.  The clarity is stunning and practically ranks as Near Mint the quality is that good.  There is only some light crackle literally on the fade out.  'Moby Dick' plays very clearly again although you can hear some light crackle again during the drum solo.  'Bring It On Home' plays in similar fashion with some crackle on the opening and end section.  Whilst the lead guitar sounds superb there is some distortion on the vocal.
In summary there is some crackle on this rare LP but there are parts that play exceptionally well.  For an A2/B2 red/plum pressing with the 'Lemon Song' credit this is a more than acceptable copy and whilst there may be some crackle and a 2/3 skips there are no clicks or loud pops.

Gatefold cover
The E.J. Day gatefold is in excellent condition for its age and very clean compared to so many others.  The two bottom edges do have some rubbing whilst the top two hardly have any.  The spine remains in great shape and is 100% legible.  The corners do have spme rubbing also.  The opening edge only has very light handling wear.  The front cover is still are very clean with only the faintest of 'spotting' and the back cover does have some ringwear although not excessive plus a few small scratch type marks.  The inside of the gatefold is in superb condition with no markings or writing.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous' inner sleeve is in excellent condition with no splits to the sides just light creasing and age related marking.  It has the patent numbers plus 'Made In England' and 0270 printed on one side which refers to the release date.
The Labels
The red/plum labels are in excellent shape with no writing although the S1 label does have some small marks on the plum section.  The S2 label is in perfect condition.
