Description

Led Zeppelin II A6/B4 Atlantic 58818 Red/Plum Label ('Baldwin' credit)
This is another red/plum label variation vinyl I am selling.  This is a later pressing but has the very rare 'Baldwin' credit but only on the S2 label.  This is John Paul Jones' real surname and 'Jones' is indeed shown on S1.  This incorrect credit was only on the very early run of this 'Killing Floor' pressing and as can be seen the matrix is 11 / 1111 - the first off the production line.
Relatively few were pressed making this now a very collectable pressing in its own right and even fewer survive in this superb condition!
This LP has the 'Warner Bros/Jewel Music' credits on the labels.
588198 // A / 6 // 1 1
588198 // B / 4 // 1 1  11
The audio on S1 is Near Mint (Mint- for the majority / track 4 is Ex+)
The audio on S2 is Ex+ (Near Mint in many sections)

The gatefold cover is Ex
The labels are Mint-
The poly-lined inner sleeve is Ex+
Visual grading
This vinyl is in near immaculate condition and has been beautifully preserved down the decades.  It has not been played too much judging by the spindle wear.  It is incredibly clean and I can only detect a couple of mega faint hairlines and no scratches.  It is definitely the 'cleanest' red/plum LZII I have seen and easily the best 'Baldwin' credit version.  It is pristine and at first glance looks as new.  Absolutely stunning.
Play grading
There is barely any lead in static and 'Whole Lotta Love' then plays with superb strong audio from the very first groove.  The is no interference on the intro whatsoever!  It continues to play with immaculate audio and rarely have I heard such clarity on a red/plum pressing let alone one as rare as this.  The bass is so powerful and the audio definition is just incredible and there is no distortion anywhere.  The instrumental section is breathtaking and Mint- without a doubt.  The very quiet 'way down inside' vocal only section has a handful of light clicks but it still plays very clearly with no static or crackle.  The remainder of this classic plays with superb precision and there is no 'background' on the fade out at all.  A fantastic start to this classic album!
The quiet intro on 'What is and What Should Never Be' begins with perfect audio, no 'background', and it plays 'as new'.  This is a stunning version and the most impressive I have heard for a long time.  There are so many quiet sections and yet I only heard a couple of light clicks, that is the only interference.  The rest of the track has stunning power and even the extended fade out has hardly any 'background' aside from two clicks literally at the end.
'Killing Floor' is sublime from start to finish.  With no discernible interference the audio could not be improved upon.  For a red/plum press this is dynamic audio at its very best!  The mid guitar solo plays with real power and no distortion and the long bass section again plays with a clarity that is second to none.  I am confident in grading this as Mint- the quality is mind-blowing and this continues to the end.
As any Led Zepp fan knows 'Thank You' is always the problematic track on this side in terms of interference and often plays with a fair amount of distortion.  The intro here is nigh on perfect and there are no intrusive sounds at all.  Wow!  As it progresses this quality does not diminish and thus far this is one of the 'cleanest' versions of this track I have heard in a very long time.  There is the some very light static on the second half of the track but it is only very sporadic.  A couple of louder crackle sounds prior to the 'if the sun refused to shine...' line.  The quiet end section with the fade out/in/out plays very clearly on the whole and with only a little 'background' and much less than you generally hear.  I would class it as light intermittent static rather than crackle.  Very impressive in my opinion!  And...there is barely any distortion here providing another example of how little this vinyl has been played.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again there is hardly any lead in static and 'Heartbreaker' then plays with incredible power and such strong bass.  The depth and sonic quality here is 'high end' in the extreme.  You can easily tell the grooves have not been worn by excessive play as the audio is just so clear and 'new sounding'.  Even the 'quiet' middle guitar section has only a small number of light static sounds and the following section is just mind-blowing, it plays so loud, so clear and with no distortion I cannot adequately describe how Mint it sounds!  The remainder plays with perfect precision also.  What a spellbinding version!
'Livin' Lovin' Maid' plays with the same strength and clarity although I did hear a couple of faint clicks.  Aside from that it plays with great power and no distortion.  Again each note is so defined this track has hardly been played.
'Ramble On' has 3/4 light clicks on the intro but there is no other 'background'.  From then on the audio plays 'as new' with astonishing power and clarity.  Again it shows why these red/plum pressings are so sought after - the clarity and depth of sound simply cannot be beaten.  The very long fade out has only a little static and it is not intrusive.
'Moby Dick' has only one faint click on the intro and then plays extremely well.  The long drum solo plays with great clarity and there is no obvious interference apart from two brief sections where there is a little crackle.  There are however no loud clicks or pops.  So yes a little 'background' but the vast majority of this solo plays in impeccable fashion.
The long quiet 'Bring It On Home' intro plays with very clear audio and has only the odd light static sound.  The remainder plays with real power and there is very little distortion on the top end.  It is a superb listen and it 'rocks out' loud and true with great power and depth.  The quiet end section plays nigh on perfectly with no static or crackle and provides a superb end to this classic album.
In summary this rare 'Baldwin' credit LP plays with superb Near Mint / Mint- audio for the vast majority.  There is the odd light click/crackle sound but they are infrequently heard and do not detract from the stunning overall power of this album.  The depth and sonic quality is amongst the best I have ever heard on a red/plum pressing and this will add to any collection.
The Gatefold
The E.J. Day gatefold is in great condition with only minor shelf wear.  So often the cover is marked but the front cover here is exceptionally clean with no obvious marking and the same can be said for the back cover.  There is no fading anywhere.  The inside of the gatefold is also in stunning condition.  There is some rubbing on the top and bottom edges but that is the only wear really.  The spine remains 100% legible with only a couple of small rub marks.  A very clean example overall.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous' inner is in excellent condition with only one tiny side split and some light creasing and discolouration around the edges.  10/70 is printed on one side which refers to the release date.
The Labels
The red/plum labels are in fantastic condition with no marking or writing.  There is not too much spindle wear suggesting it hasn't been played a great deal.
