Description
LED ZEPPELIN III A5 / B5 Atlantic 2401022 UK 1970 Red/Plum Label
On offer here is an immaculate very early red/plum pressing that has the misspelt 'Celebration' credit on the label which of course should read as 'Celebration Day'. The previous owner assured me that it had only been played the once so as to record it to tape. I purchased a number of vinyls from him that have all been superbly well preserved which I will sell gradually.
The publishing credits are 'Warner Bros. Music Ltd'.
The famous Aleister Crowley quotes 'Do what thou wilt' and 'So mote it be' are etched on the dead wax and the rotating wheel still works perfectly.

Visual grading
This is visually stunning, it is just so beautifully clean! Looking as good as the day it was first pressed there are no hairlines and certainly no scratches and I have inspected the vinyl under various lights. It has an incredible jet black glossy sheen and a couple of barely visible tiny spindle lines on each side. This vinyl has been fantastically well preserved and it is so rare to find a red/plum pressing such as this and especially one with the rare 'Celebration' misspelling. You would be forgiven for thinking this was new it is quite simply stunning! Super clean run out grooves also.
Play grading
With barely any lead in static 'Immigrant Song' then plays with immense power and depth. Aside from one very faint dust tick this is 'as new' and rarely have I heard this classic play with such precision. There is no distortion and grades as Mint- the audio is of a superb standard. A stunning start.
The quiet intro on 'Friends' is exceptionally good with just one click and 3/4 mega light dust ticks. From then on it plays with superb clarity and precision. I did hear a couple of faint ticks in the background that are not intrusive in any way. The fade out has a little static, not crackle, and overall this track is a stunning listen.
'Celebration Day' has a modicum of light static on the first few seconds and then displays audio of a superlative standard. So often this has some distortion on the top level as there is just so much 'going on' in the mix but I am pleased to say there is none here whatsoever and the clarity again is of the highest quality. There is no muddiness to the sound and the sonic quality is breathtaking. This grades as Mint- and the long fade out is almost 'as new' giving you an indication of the superb clarity on offer.
The clarity of sound on 'Since I've Been Loving You' is again hugely impressive. Yes there is one faint click on the intro and the odd mega light static sound but with so many quiet sections the quality of the recording is rare to find on such an early red/plum pressing. It plays so cleanly and Jimmy's guitar solo is incredibly powerful and has no distortion. The super quiet section that follows has hardly any 'background' apart from two faint ticks. So often the 'loud' end section has some distortion but not on this occasion! Overall a stunning version that plays with remarkable power and depth.
'Out On The Tiles' ends S1 with great power but as is always the case with this final track there is a little distortion on the top level. A common feature on any 'final track' to a side. However, you know what to expect and it still plays with awesome power and no other interference. The instrumental end section is so strong and powerful and the fade out has no 'background' of any kind. A superb end to the side.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The quiet intro on 'Gallows Pole' has no clicks or pops and only a modicum of light static, nothing intrusive, and plays so clearly. This classic 'foot stomper' then has audio that can only be graded as Mint- the quality is out of this world! There is no distortion on the top level and the sonic quality is of the highest standard possible. Again there is no 'background' on the extended fade out. An absolutely stunning version.
'Tangerine' is another with a very quiet intro and yet again it plays with supreme clarity and only a handful of barely audible dust ticks. This provides another example of just how well this vinyl has been maintained. The quality does not diminish and the audio is near faultless. A sublime version of this track if truth be told.
'That's The Way' is totally astounding! If ever there was a Mint version to be heard then this is it! I always go on about clarity and sonic quality but that is how any vinyl should be judged. The audio on offer here is 'high end' and plays as if it was only pressed yesterday. The depth and warmth is stunning. Wow! I can't quiet believe what I'm hearing!
'Bron-y-aur Stomp' and the final track 'Hats off to (Roy) Harper' end the side with breathtaking quality once more. With only one faint click on the former (due to a mega tiny speck that refuses to move!) the audio is practically 'as new'. A stunning end to a wonderful red/plum pressing.
In summary this rare 'Celebration' red/plum press plays with a sublime 'high end' quality that will not disappoint. The vast majority of this classic plays 'as new' the audio is of a superlative standard. Played only once before in its lifetime the audio reflects that with stunning clarity.
The Gatefold
This fully laminated E.J. Day gatefold is in fantastic condition and has a stunning glossy look to it. At first glance it looks as new! I am pleased to say the 'wheel' rotates perfectly. The edges are beautifully clean with only a couple of very small rubs and the spine is also in great order with only two small rubs near the top. The corners have next to no wear and the opening edge has no handling wear whatsoever. The laminate throughout has no splits or lifting and is in superlative condition. The front cover just looks brand new it is so clean and the back cover has only some ringwear but none of the discolouration that you so often see. As per some of these UK pressings the gatefold were produced in Germany and this is stated bottom right. The inside of the gatefold is just Mint it is 100% immaculate. Overall this is a stunning gatefold and is without doubt one of the most impressive I have ever seen, if not the best.
Inner sleeve
The original poly-lined 'Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous' inner is so clean and has no splits or marking and hardly any creasing. Again the cleanest I have seen in a long time.
The labels
The red/plum labels are in wonderful condition with only a couple of mega faint spindle lines on each. At a certain angle you can see some very faint lines across the labels but it does not detract from the overall look of them, they still look very clean indeed.
