Led Zeppelin IV A3 / B4 1st Press w/ Peter Grant Credit & Inverted Feather on S2
This genuine first press is of course very collectable today and whilst there is some interference the majority still does play to an excellent audio. What you notice is some static distortion here and there but by no means is it prevalent across the entire album, indeed many of the tracks play with great clarity and depth. Please see below for my detailed audio grading which does show just how many tracks do play extremely well! The vinyl itself is quite clean, there are no scratches just some hairlines.
The iconic cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the inner sleeve is very clean with just one small(ish) split on the bottom edge, you won't find many better actually! This first pressing has the Peter Grant on both labels and the Inverted Feather on S2. There is no Superhype publishing credit on either label and 'Hop' is spelt correctly.

Visual description
The vinyl is in excellent condition with a strong glossy sheen and there are no scratches. Under a forgiving light you cannot see any marking but when you look under a bright light you can see some hairlines but not an excessive amount. There is also one small hairline on the first track of S2 that is a little more obvious but it has no affect on the audio. The run out grooves are very clean and the red / plum labels, with the Peter Grant credit and the inverted feather, just have some spindle wear mainly around the inner circle.
Play Grading
The intro on 'Black Dog' with Page 'warming up his guitar' plays perfectly and Plant's opening vocal section has no background either. Page's initial work is so strong and deep and it continues to play with stunning power and depth. One of the brief quieter 'moments' has some very light static but from start to finish there are no clicks or pops and it could hardly play any better. Page's final solo is superb - perhaps just a minor touch of distortion but so minimal and hardly worth a mention. The fade out has a couple of minor ticks and I would say Near Mint- is deserved.
'Rock And Roll' plays with phenomenal audio from the very first note. The percussive opening is 'as new' as is the rest of the intro. The first vocal is equal to that and this sonic quality is maintained throughout. The power and definition of the audio is immense and of course Bonham and Jones add so much to the overall sound. The sonic quality is just on another level here and there is no distortion on the top end. The clarity is so impressive also i.e. you can easily hear the piano on the final third. This is a sublime Mint version.
The quiet build up on 'The Battle Of Evermore' plays very clearly with only the bare minimum of light static here and there, it really is very quiet, and Plant's opening vocal has only very minimal static distortion. From then on it plays extremely well with no ticks, clicks or pops - yes admittedly there is a little static distortion on the vocal but it really is kept to a minimum and the instrumentation itself plays with impeccable clarity. I think Ex is a fair representation of the audio.
The acoustic intro on the classic 'Stairway To Heaven' plays very clearly with only minimal background static and the first verse is very clean with only a couple of minor ticks and no other background. The second verse is similar with just a little static distortion on the vocal and during the It makes me wonder... vocal there is a light tick followed by a click. The next two verses / instrumental do have a little more static distortion but then as Bonham comes in the audio is quite impressive. There is a greater depth to the music and much less distortion and this continues through the next two verses. Page's 'strumming' section does have some more distortion but his solo plays with great power and clarity and Plant's high octane vocal is very strong indeed - superb audio here and during the instrumental work. The final quiet vocal ends this classic with very great clarity and no intrusion. I would say this ranges between VG and Ex

The intro on 'Misty Mountain Hop' is 'as new' and the opening vocal is just as strong. It continues in the same precise way with a sonic quality that cannot be faulted. The vocals are very clean here and there is nothing to detract from the audio. There is just a hint of distortion but it is very minor, perhaps just a little more on the second half. There are no ticks, clicks or pops and I will grade as Near Mint- overall.
The intro on 'Four Sticks' plays with tremendous clarity and depth and the same can be said for the opening vocal section. As the volume increases - where Jones' bass is very much in the forefront - the playback is absolutely STUNNING! So strong and deep, the depth is incredible. From then on it plays with exceptional quality with no sign of any interference. The 'keyboard' section towards the end is phenomenal and the final vocal is of the same high end standard. This track obviously hasn't been played very much and that is reflected in the sonic 'landscape' the audio is just stunning throughout. It has to grade as Mint- it is that good.
The intro on 'Going To California' plays perfectly (you can easily hear Plant's single breath!) and then the first vocal does play with just a minor touch of static distortion and a couple of very light clicks. The acoustic 'break' has no background and from then on it plays very clearly and with only very minimal distortion and in some sections none at all. An Ex+ track.
The classic 'When The Levee Breaks' plays with very strong audio overall. Bonham's percussive intro is perfect and the remainder of this section has only very minimal static distortion, nothing to worry about. This track is of course often affected by distortion but it is kept to a minimum here I am pleased to say. Plant's first vocal is very clean and it continues to play with genuine power and depth and the clarity of sound is very impressive also. I have reached the halfway point and there has been very little static distortion - each note is very clean and precise and the mid instrumental is a case in point. There is maybe a little distortion on the final third but it is still so minimal and really not intrusive. In fact the more I listen to it the more I am impressed by it! The end vocal keeps up this standard - a very strong version and Ex+ is deserved.
In summary this very collectable first pressing plays to an excellent standard for the majority. As you can see there is some static distortion here and there but a number of tracks still play with very strong and clear audio. The good news is that there is only one click on S1 and a couple of very quiet ones on S2 - the only issue with this LP is that it has been played! However, I grade with honesty and integrity and as you can see it still does plays with great quality across much of the album. Not perfect audio but it's rare to find a genuine first press that does!
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal shelf wear and has retained its original shape and structure extremely well. The only 'real' wear is on the edges which do have some rubbing but even then not an excessive amount. There is also one very small split next to the corner on the bottom edge of the back cover. The spine is still strong and wide and has only very minimal wear on the corners and the right hand corners are very clean also. The opening edge has very little handling wear. The front cover is in lovely condition with no marking or creasing and the back cover is almost as good with just one very small faint mark near the top edge. even better! The inside of the gatefold is in great shape with only a couple of minor specks and hardly any fading around the edges. A fine example overall.
The original lyric inner is super clean with just one small split on the bottom edge. It has no real marking on either side, just a couple of minor specks, and the flipbacks are still firmly in place on the credits side. One of the best you will find despite the one small split - usually they have one, two or three large splits!
