Label/Format: Swan Song – Beautiful designed original examples with ‘Made in UK’ text. This copy a FULL UK pressing, many versions sold in the UK were foreign pressings. These labels have matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. There are no WB logos on this first pressed example.

Label Conditions: All four are fresh, clean and highly attractive with deep, rich colour and hardly any spindle traces. Any blemishes tiny and faint, hardly anything.

Country of Manufacture: England, that is every part. So many of these were pressed in Germany and the early full English pressings are not as common as you might think, especially first issue ones appearing hardly played. This pair also very well pressed with sound to match.

Rarity & Info: The title itself is hardly scarce but very early pressed UK copies are harder so little used. A high percentage of this landmark classic are found pressed and made in Germany for the UK market. The cover is always immensely difficult to find in better conditions, it being weakened by 41 die-cut windows, many are seen badly damaged with tatty, feathered and burr window edges – or even torn. The edges always seem to fair worst, most are seen badly scuffed and rubbed, bashed or badly out-of-shape. Also the card inner sleeve are seldom found without edge splits or tears, this pair are still naturally intact. Overall this set has only modestly light wear with full description further down.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music, some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy, this album topped both the UK and US album charts and was their sixth release. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat to that date never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all and this copy does it very fine justice with both records playing impressively with the packaging in very fine condition as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better for such a wear-prone and fragile cover. A UK-made example with all the appropriate text that reads: “SWAN SONG / 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10 - Cullderstead Ltd., trading as Swan Song - A Swan Song/Atlantic recording distributed by WEA Records Ltd. P & © 1975”. Surfaces are matt and smooth and has 41 die-cut windows. Includes the two UK card inner sleeves with correct first issue details and the gatefold ‘white window’ insert sheet, also with original text matter.

Cover Front: Firstly, I always check the windows – all are crisp and sharp with no burring, thickening, splits or damage. The cutting generally crisp and neat with any traces of thinned card residue minimal. These windows are up there with the finest I have seen. The rest of the front is largely the same, any marks, rubbing, creasing or blemishes, tiny, very few and faint with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Being darker than the front any minor blemishes or rubbing will show more, but little on view here. A little rubbing to the very top of the top opening edge that rarely will ever escape some minor wear simply by removing the records. Slight rub traces seen under light, any creasing minimal again. Both front and back are very nice and remain attractive with only scant clues of vulnerability and age.

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable and rarely seen totally sharp or unsoftened by usage. This has gentle thickening and mild patchy burring, but is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way – as indeed is the entire cover and ALL contents. The ends slighly softened with the odd tiny nick. Given all the facts however, these perilous areas have fared pretty well.

Bottom Edge: Wide and thick to hold the weighty contents, this also totally uncrushed retaining its boxy shape. Any rubbing light, patchy indeed and mostly light. Again this vulnerable has fared quite well.

Right Edge & Left (Spine): The spine edge has a little light very patchy rubbing and the red text has very gently lightened over time. Red ink very prone to fading badly, often going pale, even pink or even fading away totally, this still easy to read and reasonably strong as-seen. Minimal compression and overall, still neat. The right side, almost certainly not exposed to any natural light in a rack, has little to fault at all.

Corners: Light corner rubs but retaining very fine definition apart from the spine top that has a tiny nick and a hint of erosion to its open end. The opening pair often become very tatty and shredded, often badly torn and damaged, so considering all that, even these are in fine condition.

Cover Summary: With any blemishes or wear little and mainly light, this UK original cover has survived time and storage better than many, if not most seen. It remains attractive with only scant hint of age, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT/EXCELLENT(+): both have the correct SSK 89400/A and /B numbers with straight side entrances, any thickening to one minimal patchy and light, hardly any on the other at all. Both clean, fresh and attractive, any creasing to one few, light and faint, the other again with hardly any. One side is dark, the other light, so different effects can be utilised as seen though the main covers various windows. These card inners were never lined, so often found split, this pair still intact with no repairs, a couple of fine rubs near the central areas, but as fine and light as they get. A very fine looking pair overall.

The Folded ‘Slip’ Insert: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. Clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequenly on this unless kept away from those dark surfaces. No creasing, edge thickening or toning, this has barely aged and includes all the details as per the main cover. The plain card back side has no writing, just mild darkening around the edges. All corners crisp with with no knocks or dinks, any rub traces to the printed surfaces gentle and faint seen critically under light. This has been perfectly folded with all edges neatly parallel – the small details that make the difference. The credit details to confirm: “Gothic Print Finishers Ltd., London SE9 2EQ”. Also with the “Swan Song SSK 89400” catalogue number and address “SWAN SONG, 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10”.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual pair that are clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, few even registers with most being quite wispy. Visually fine records that plays very well, they should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This legendary double album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this pair very well pressed with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises – that often not the case. Mass-produced albums more often had pressing issues, faults and unwanted rasps or crackles. Few available copies will outperform these early original UK records significantly. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records have been played relatively lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this album, the odd sporadic tick to politely remind of what is being played is near impossible to avoid over four sides, and there are some quieter passages. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
