Country of Manufacture: England: so many of these were pressed in Germany and the early English pressings are not as common as you might think.

Rarity: The title itself is hardly scarce but early pressed UK copies are a little harder to find especially with two very clean records that offer nigh-on perfect sound. A high percentage of this landmark classic are found pressed and made in Germany for the UK market. The cover is always hard to find in fine condition as well – being weakened by 41 die-cut windows, many are seen badly damaged with tatty, feathered and burr window edges – even torn.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy this album topped both the UK and US album charts and was their sixth release. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all and this copy does it superb justice.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High Indeed: with 41 – yes 41 cut out windows (20 on the front and 21 on the back, some rectangular, some with arched tops) and a thick, box-like cover, this is vulnerable to all forms of wear. This very ‘airy’ boxy cover (when empty expecially) becomes very delicate and flimsy and few escape damage and wear. The fact the records enter within thick card inners via the top makes even entering and removal a hazardous operation. The window cut-outs often catch, tear or burr. All edges are equally vulnerable and rarely seen without often major rubbing. This one has minimal wear with the windows all very crisp and neat.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably undergraded at that. A UK-made example, format as mentioned already.

Cover Front: Firstly, the windows: all are very crisp and sharp with barely even a hint of burring. Two or three fine surface creases that have modest visibility and all is clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a rub to be seen. This is one of the finest front I have seen on this fragile cover for some time.

Cover Back: All very similar again. The windows all crisp and undamaged. A fine and faint burr hint on the top entrance edge that few, if any will avoid totally and a small crease on the bottom edge. What sets this apart still further is the lack of rubbing on the folds which are all erect and uncrushed giving that ultimate neat look that makes all the difference.

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable and rarely seen totally sharp or unsoftened by usage. A little thickening with minor hints of burring (being quite critical). The corners to this entrance are undamaged and very neat indeed with no burring, splits or rubbing – this beyond difficult to find, but emphasising here, the contents have not been removed or inserted often. This is guaranteed untrimmed.

Bottom Edge: Another area that seldom escapes significant rubbing. So again to see with with barely any is a most welcome surprise. When fully laden with all the contents, this cover is heavy. So friction within storage becomes hard to avoid, hence the surface loses it’s ink. Well this one hasn’t. The only small blemish is one fine crease just right of centre and this retains it’s original boxy shape and has not crushed or compressed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This is closed and also retains it’s very fine thick shape with no crushing and any compression tiny near the top. Any rubbing is ultra small and faint.

Spine and Text: Absolutely the best spine I have seen on this cover for ages. Again uncrushed or rubbed and the best news of all – ALL text is present with no fading to the red lettering for which this cover nearly always suffers if exposed in a rack. This vulnerable spine is practically as made and again I reitterate, just about all the folds on this example retain all their ink with no scuffs or chipping.

Corners: All are way above average with little to fault at all. So many are rounded, bashed or even broken with tears. There is none of this here at all and they all retain excellent to near mint shape. The four are solid, uncrushed or even creased, absolutely guaranteed with no repairs or enhancements. Simply a rarer case of the one and only original owner knowing how to look after fragile covers.

Cover Summary: Very few visual blemishes to one of rock’s more unforgiving covers – this really is a unique design and although hardly rare, finding them in such condition certainly is considerably more difficult. The actual windows will not be too easy to find better and the same goes for just about all areas. One that should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(++) / MINT(-): both practically as new, these are unlined, both unsplit and very clean with NO repairs. No rubbing, no creasing, no wear worthy of mention. The only blemish a tiny crease on the top of one (but look very hard to even spot it), hence the small lowering of grade to one. This pair have the deep recessed side openings – some were flush – making this pair much neater, but more prone to damage. BOTH these recessed parts are pristine as seen on my close-up picture to explain this detail.

The Folded Insert: EXCELLENT(++): clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequenly on this unless kept away from those dark surfaces. The side edges all crisp and sharp with any thickening to the opening top pair being very, very slight indeed. Again, this being one of the very best I seen for some time.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT: both in very clean with fine shine and I feel sure, only modestly played. There are a few light surface marks but have NO sound – and this is a superb UK pressing that offers fantastic sound throughout. I have heard several of these that have looked pristine only to crackle, pop and click due to indifferent pressing quality. Well this one excelled and offers little else but superb, clean reproduction of the sublime power-house rock as their fans demand. For me, nothing is more important than the audio quality and this pair really DO deliver.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play superbly well and even above their visual grading with very little to fault. Powerful, distortion-free sound with amazing sonic delivery of the music that only the original analogue format truly offers. Heavy rock albums always sound better via vinyl with the depth, power and grace it really offers. Probably the cleanest pressed pair I have heard for quite awhile in fact. Any surface sound barely even registered and no pops or significant clicks were noted. All frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with ultimate detail and dynamic range. This was a joy and gave a true sense of awe, the power of Bonham’s percussion has to be heard from the vinyl source. Few copies will match or better this early British pressing I feel sure, and these have probably not been handled for decades. Okay, a few fine and light surface marks, but ignored and of no consequence unless visual perfection is demanded. Taking both records for what they offer plus the very impressive cover and it’s contents, this is a very impressive all-round UK example that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
