Label/Format: Swan Song – Beautiful designed original examples and please note these all have ‘Made in UK’ text. This copy a FULL UK pressing, many versions sold in the UK were foreign pressings. These labels have matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. There are no WB logos on this ultimate first pressed example, purchased within days of release day.

Label Conditions: All four are ultra fresh, clean and highly attractive with deep, rich colour and NO spindle marks on any. Another from the one owner collection who usually put his initial ‘P’ on the labels as here (tiny, neat and quite discrete at the 6 o’clock position. He bought the records, usually stored them in brand new Decca soft-lined inners, and protected the main sleeve in plastic protective covers. Most appear hardly played, then with utmost care, this another gem with all four sides playing with immaculate sound, that never to be taken for granted on the more mass-produced albums.

Country of Manufacture: England, that is every part. So many of these were pressed in Germany and the early FULL English pressings are not as common as you might think, especially first issue ones played only once or twice.

Rarity & Info: The title itself is hardly scarce but very early pressed UK copies are harder to find especially with two records barely even run-in in vinyl terms, that offer nigh-on perfect sound. A high percentage of this landmark classic are found pressed and made in Germany for the UK market. The cover is always immensely difficult to find in anything like top conditions, it being weakened by 41 die-cut windows, many are seen badly damaged with tatty, feathered and burr window edges – or even torn, these are all fantastic, as-made. The edges always seem to fair worst, most are seen scuffed and badly rubbed, bashed or badly out-of-shape. Indeed this is the first one I have seen for years with the bottom storage edge with minimal rubbing – all details of the cover are further down, suffice to say, the one owner from new put his customary ‘P’ initial on a small yellow sticker on the cover’s back along with his purchase date of 10 March 1975. This should remove fine, but knowing cover’s surface fragility, I did not want to risk it, and personally I think it adds history and reiterates just how early this copy is. Both inners are immaculate with the correct catalogue numbers and text details. A full UK copy in this all-round condition is now quite rare to find.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music, some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy this album topped both the UK and US album charts and was their sixth release. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat to that date never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all and this copy does it supreme justice with both records playing little short of perfect.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better for such a wear-prone and fragile cover. As stated, it has the one owner’s trademark single initial and purchase date on a small yellow sticker that is clearly visible in my pictures. A UK-made example with all the appropriate text that reads: “SWAN SONG / 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10 - Cullderstead Ltd., trading as Swan Song - A Swan Song/Atlantic recording distributed by WEA Records Ltd. P & © 1975”. Surfaces are matt and smooth, windows as mentioned already. Includes the two UK card inner sleeves with correct first issue details and the gatefold ‘white window’ insert sheet, also with original text matter.

Cover Front: Firstly, the windows – all are crisp and sharp with no burring, thickening, splits or damage. The cutting generally crisp and neat with any traces of thinned card residue very little and light. These windows are simply immaculate. The rest of the front is almost the same, there is just a small rub trace on the left edge fold but little else which is almost nit-picking as there is nothing else of any note to fault – simply as clean, fresh and uncreased as they get.

Cover Back: Again in superb condition, and again hardly anything to fault, a mere hint of a faint surface crease near the top left corner only. The sticker may not be for all, but I am sure it will remove, but possibly with risk know how delicate these surface are. Personally, I think it actually adds to its history and proves the date of issue – which is very early indeed.

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable and rarely seen totally sharp or unsoftened by usage. This has minimal hint of thickening and is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way – as indeed is the entire cover and ALL contents. Construction on the left back corner slightly uneven, that purely a manufacturing trait and these vary considerably from cover-to-cover. The cover retains its boxy shape with no crushing or flattening. Put simply: this fragile entrance edges will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Bottom Edge: Wide and thick to hold the weighty contents, this also totally uncrushed with nigh-on perfect shape. Any rubbing little, very patchy indeed and light, amongst the very least I have seen on this storage edge that I consider close to exceptional. This more often than not, very badly rubbed and ugly, this has survived the years well.

Right Edge & Left (Spine): The right has a small rub near the centre, again uncrushed and very neat indeed. The top fold very gently and thinly rubbed, this being somewhat critical and only notices viewed right up close. The left has a small scuff on the top fold and being very critical, a hint of gentle fading, the only area on this cover that has a trace of. Crucially the red spine text is all present and still strong, red has a tendency to fade most, often turning pink or almost disappearing if exposed to too much sunlight. This has barely any traces of this and still remains a fine solid red.

Corners: All are massively above average with little to fault at all, a tiny crease on the top left. So many are rounded, bashed or even broken with tears. These have survived well with minimal loss of definition or rubbing. Certainly avoiding knocks or dinks, and so few ever do these days.

Cover Summary: With any blemishes very few and light, this is a UK original cover that will blow most others away. Only probably one in many will match or better this significantly. Another possible upgrade for some, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR MINT: both as close to new as they get with barely any creasing bar a couple of ultra fine, near invisible half moons. These are unlined, both unsplit with no thins or even edge rubbing, very clean with NO repairs, these have straight cut manufactured side entrance edges. No rubbing, no dinks or rim impression. They have a matt surfaces and quite thick. Also these originals have a rough textured feel INSIDE, later ones have a smoother inside surface, so hardly record surface friendly making a pair or records like this all the more rare and desirable. Both have the SSK 89400/A and /B numbers.

The Folded ‘Slip’ Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequently on this unless kept away from those dark surfaces. No creasing, edge thickening or toning, this has barely aged and includes all the details as per the main cover. Even the plain white back side is superb without the usual toning or age discolouration, any traces very light and faint. All corners crisp with perfect 90 degree tips that are uncreased. This has been perfectly folded with all edges neatly parallel – the small details that make the difference between average and exceptional. The credit details to confirm: “Gothic Print Finishers Ltd., London SE9 2EQ”. Also with the “Swan Song SSK 89400” catalogue number and address “SWAN SONG, 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10”.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): both very clean with lovely shine, any hint of dulling minimal and faint under close scrutiny under bright light. Four ultra fresh labels and playing surfaces close to the same. Any surface traces are ultra fine fine, few and faint – with the unlined card inner sleeves having a distinct rough feel inside, any blemishes are nigh-on impossible to avoid, but this pair have done their very best to avoid any. Like most of the other albums from this very fine collection, the one owner from new put the records inside Decca soft-lined inners, so these have avoided the usual hairlines and abrasions most acquire, also he hardly played them. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and finding this pair of first-made UK records better will prove beyond difficult. I have heard several of these that have looked pristine only to crackle, pop and click due to indifferent pressing quality. Well this pair excelled and offer absolutely superb audio quality with all the clarity, dynamics and performance power-house rock fans demand. First UK pressings are a class above the rest and always have the very best chance in offering top sound – but that said, it can never be guaranteed making a full play-grade sound-check crucial. For me, nothing is more important than the audio quality and this pair totally blew me away.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play with amazing sound, even above their high visual gradings with barely anything to fault. Powerful, distortion-free sound with amazing sonic delivery of the music that only the original analogue format truly offers. Heavy rock albums always sound better via vinyl with the depth, warmth, power and full dynamic range it really offers. The cleanest pressed pair I have heard for a considerable time. Any surface sound barely even registered and there are no pressing issues or unwanted noises. All frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is awesome with a wide dynamic range, ultimate fine detail and delivery with no tracking issues*. This was a joy and gave a true sense of awe, the power of Bonham’s percussion has to be heard from the vinyl source. Few copies will match or better this very early, barely run-in British pressing I feel sure, and these records (and the packaging) have probably not seen light-of-day for decades. An original time has overlooked – as did the owner, they are rarely found like this these days. Taking both records for what they offer plus the very impressive cover and it’s contents, this is an immensely impressive all-round UK example that commands my highest possible recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
