Label Conditions: All four practically mint as new, I am struggling to find a discernible spindle mark or trace worthy of mention and I have so rarely seen these look so little used on what was an immensely popular album.

Country of Manufacture: England, so many of these were pressed in Germany and the early English pressings are not as common as you might think.

Rarity: The title itself is hardly scarce but early pressed UK copies are far harder to find especially with two barely records that offer high-on perfect sound. A high percentage of this landmark classic are found pressed and made in Germany for the UK market. The cover is always hard to find in fine condition as well – being so weakened by 41 die-cut windows, many are seen badly damaged with tatty, feathered and burr window edges – even tearing is commonly seen. So, as per usual when I find one of these good enough to offer, I have put a piece of white card behind the empty main cover to show the crispness of these areas – and these are really neat.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy this album topped both the UK and US album charts and was their sixth release. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High Indeed: with forty-one, yes forty-one cut out windows (20 on the front and 21 on the back, some rectangular, some with arched tops) and a thick, box-like cover, this is vulnerable to all forms of wear. This very ‘airy’ boxy cover (when empty expecially) becomes very delicate and flimsy and few escape damage and wear. The fact the records enter within inners via the top makes even entering and removal a hazardous operation. The window cut-outs often catch and tear or burr. All edges are equally vulnerable and rarely seen without often major rubbing. This one has a little edge wear but remains in a clean and tidy condition with the windows all very crisp and neat.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a UK-made example, format as mentioned already.

Cover Front: Firstly, the windows: all are very crisp and sharp with barely any hints of burring. A few light marks are seen under angled light with a few fine creases around the edges. Viewed full-on, little shows and this remaind attractive.

Cover Back: All very similar again with a few light surface marks and quite fine edge creases. It has a ‘Downtown Records’ sticker on the bottom right corner. Any wear to the darker window rims is tiny and faint

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable. Still crisp and sharp with light rubbing just apparent on the back. This is guaranteed untrimmed.

Bottom Edge: Some patchy rubbing that I have seen so few avoid. Being quite a heavy (when fully packed) album, this resting edge rarely escape some rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: No compression or crushing with any rub traces tiny and faint.

Spine and Text: Some mildish rubbing on the top fold but the actual spine surface shows little at all. Hence all the red text is present and unworn. All the closed edges on this spine are very suspectible to crushing and sometimes seen totally flattened. Not the case on this one.

Cover Summary: Some minor visual blemishes more seen under light, but all considered, this is a very attractive example of one of rock’s more unforgiving covers. The actual windows will not be too easy to find better and this cover should please many collectors.

The Inners: MINT(-): both practically as new, these are unlined, both unsplit and very clean. No rubbing, no creasing, no wear worthy of mention.

The Folded Insert: MINT(-): this being overly critical, it’s practically like new. Clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequenly on this unless kept away from dark surfaces. This one of the very best I have ever seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to MINT(-), both in very clean and clearly hardly played conditions. One fine surface mark on side two has NO sound whatsoever. With scrutiny under bright angled light, tiny ultra fine and faint surface traces are just evident. But few will avoid them as the very least. These unlined card inners are harsh and all copies of this had the records inside them from manufacture until ‘first’ removal. Most of the ‘careful collectors’ put them into replacement lined inners but it did not stop a few ultra faint surface marks or fine scuffs happening initially on many copies. It still makes me cringe removing any record from these type of inners and I clearly remember – with breath held – doing so on a brand new copy when first issued (along with other similar albums e.g. the post ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ Pink Floyd titles). Sometimes you could actaully hear the fine gritty dust scraping across the record surface. Still a very impressive visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. I have seen some shocking examples of these records before, which indeed reitterates just how fine these really are – both sound SUPERB too. I think they will please most collectors wanting a true UK-pressed copy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play superbly well with practically nothing to fault. Powerful, distortion-free sound with amazing sonic audio quality. Probably the cleanest pressed pair I have heard for years. Any surface sound barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted. All frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This was a joy and gave a true sense of awe, the power of Bonham’s percussion has to be heard from the vinyl source. Few copies will match or better this early British pressing I feel sure, and these have probably not been handled for decades. The cover may have a few minor visual marks and edge rubs, but the vinyl has little to fault. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these monumental records. This set could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
