LED ZEPPELIN’S PRESENCE, it’s taken a while, but this 1976 release has earned its place with the other great titles from the biggest rock band of that decade. Lavishing for years in the intimidating strength of its predecessor, PHYSICAL GRAFFITI, PRESENCE was quickly recorded and issued mainly while vocalist Robert Plant sported a cast on his leg from a car accident. PRESENCE is heavy on the rock side featuring high-octane guitar from Jimmy Page and no acoustic guitars or piano to be found. John Bonham’s thunderous bashing and layers of guitar are highlights in ACHILLES LAST STAND while NOBODY’S FAULT BUT MINE, a reworking of a blue turn by Blind Willie Johnson gets goosed Zep-style by Page and company.

Jimmy Page's guitar, John Paul Jones fluid bass, have never sounded so clear. Robert Plant's vocals are hypnotic and John Bonham's drums explode from your speakers. Every detail of the original cover art has been recreated to the "T", even down to its weight.
On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin issued a relentless assault of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, and Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation which gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before - the galloping "Immigrant Song" is powered by Plant's banshee wail, "Celebration Day" turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and "Out on the Tiles" lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delves deeply into English folk. "Gallows Pole" updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is an infectious acoustic romp, while "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes. The band hasn't left the blues behind, but the twisted bottleneck blues of "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper" actually outstrips the epic "Since I've Been Loving You", which is the only time Zeppelin sounds a bit set in their ways. THE HONEYDRIPPERS VOLUME ONE ORIGINAL 1984 EP VINYL LP - I think Smokey Robinson first sang that line in "Second That Emotion." That's true here, because after you listen to this one you'll want more than five songs, and you'll want a Volume II. Whether you're a Led Zep fanatic intrigued by another Plant/Page pet project, or a nostalgic type attracted to the crooning vocals and big band sound, this is a keeper. I'm the former, and I have to say Robert Plant's vocals are transcending. Yes, it's the guy who sang "Whole Lotta Love" leading the Spectoresque wall of duop sound in the first track here, "I Get a Thrill." The Phil Phillips classic, "Sea of Love," is covered nicely: It sounds like Page & Co. took an iron to the Phillips track. "Rockin' at Midnight" is unleashed big band fun, and "I Got A Woman" does fine justice to the Ray Charles effort. And on "Young Boy Blues," Robert's voice is ethereal, matching his "Sea" try and reminiscent of earlier croons with and without Led Zeppelin, like "I'm Gonna Crawl" and "Big Log." Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and company show that great rock musicians are great musicians, period. The string sections, big band sound, beautiful arrangements, and gorgeous guitar solos underscore the tremendous talent that recreated this music. It's true that Volume I was intended to be released without the artists' identities, but fat chance with such a fine ensemble. The LP is lush, well produced, and easy to listen to. My only gripe here is that I wanted more, and indeed Volume II was never to be. Still, I must recommend it -- if you don't like it, I assure you that someone else you know will
