Beautiful copy of the 1969 first pressing of Led Zeppelin’s first album on Atlantic SD-8216. This is the extremely rare plum and gold (or purple and brown) label pressing with a slightly different mix. Some try to say this is an RCA club pressing but that is absolutely false. It was a one-off anomaly at the RCA Indianapolis plant, where for some reason a few Atlantic LPs were issued with this different colored label, which is like the ATCO label, an Atlantic subsidiary. Not only is the label different but there is a different mix on side one and the spacing of the songs on side two is longer. According to one source:
From bsnpubs: This label is rare and only appeared on a few titles from around 8130 to 8200. The Led Zeppelin album error commands premium prices, since not only is the label in error, but side 1 of the album is a different mix from the regular pressing.
Also side 2 does sound a little different from the standard issue. There is a long pause between "Black Mountain Side" and "Communication Breakdown", where the standard issue had no silence at all. And there is an unusually long silence between "Communication Breakdown" and "I Can't Quit You Baby", much longer than was on the standard issue.
Anyhow this copy is in unusually nice condition. The disc has a few sleeve scuffs and light marks but they are mostly entirely superficial, and it plays just beautifully. Listening to it now I barely hear the slightest crackle anywhere. In a couple of places I hear one very faintly. There is a tiny bit at the very end of Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, but barely. I think that is the only crackle I hear anywhere. Even between songs is perfectly quiet. This is really an incredible sounding copy. There is some writing on the side one label. The cover has a bit of general shelfwear, with some pretty worn corners on the left, and much less so on the right. See photos. A bit of fraying on the spine as well, and a cluster of little surface dents on the back that can be seen in the right light. Still it is actually a pretty nice cover, with barely the slightest ringwear and quite nicely intact and striking. This is a truly beautiful copy of this highly sought after rarity. I don’t think I have ever come across another one with such a good disc. It sounds glorious. Hard to top this one.
