LED ZEPPELIN "4 ZOSO" (U.S.ATLANTIC SD19129) 1977 SEALED COPY NO UPC STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN STICKER ON CVR....BEAUTIFUL
In 1971 Led Zeppelin went to Headley Grange, where they lived together during they recorded their fourth studio album. After the first three self titled studio albums and many sold out shows around the globe, they had the burden to create another album, that holds the high standard of the first three Zeppelin Long Players. The band decided to put an album out without any information about the band or the album name. Guitarist Jimmy Page said some years later, that he knew the album was gonna sell it anyway. Every member of the band choose a symbol, that represent the member. Drummer John “Bonzo“ Bonham and Bass player John Paul Jones took this as a game and choose both a symbol of a book. But the singer Robert Plant and the guitarist wanted to create something meaningful and designed their own logos. The symbols were printed in the booklet and the album is today often called “Ruins“ or “The Four Symbols“, but the name “Led Zeppelin IV“ became accepted. Late in the year 1971 the album was released and became over the years the most selling Hard Rock Album of all times. The most popular song on the album is without a doubt „Stairway to Heaven“, which is the most demanded song on american radio stations of all time. The 8 minute epic starts gently but develops into a hard rocking tune with a fantastic guitar solo, which is often considered as the greatest of all time. „Stairway to Heaven“ is surely the main reason why this album sold more copies than other great Zep Releases, but it‘s not the only good song here. The riff based „Black Dog“ and the Rock N‘ Roll Number „Rock and Roll“ are showing the hard rocking side of Led Zeppelin, which is a good contrast to the gentle songs like the acoustic „Going to California“ or the folky „The Battle of Evermore“. „The Battle of Evermore“ could have been released on the folky „Led Zeppelin III“ and with the english female singer Sandy Denny it contains the only guest appearance on any Zeppelin album. The song was also performed live and the guest vocals were sung by Bassist Jones, who played mandolin on this track. The only song I don‘t really like so much here is „Four Stick“, but it‘s still a decent track. Another good song is the poppy „Misty Mountain Hop“, which was often performed live. The album ended like it begun: With a big bang. „When the Levee Breaks“ is a great way to close an album. It is a long blues based hard rocking tune, which contains one of the most iconic, unique an most sampled drum sound of all time and it also showcases the qualities of singer Robert Plant on the harp.
