Lee Konitz’s masterful alto sax set off by a complete saxophone section led by Jimmy Giuffre. Great solos, great background.
It was arranger-saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre’s idea to record Lee Konitz in a five-horn sax section: “It would magnify his singing, personal sound, and also his free, natural phrasing.”
They chose experienced soloists, because they wanted each to have their own lyrical line at all times. The section included: Alto sax, Konitz and Hal McKusik; Tenor sax, Warne Marsh and Ted Brown; Baritone sax, Giuffre.
Pianist Bill Evans headed the rhythm section with Buddy Clark, bass; and Ronnie Free, drums.
This monophonic recording was released on Verve MG V-8335 in 1959. The label has black with silver printing with the Verve “Trumpeter” logo. This is a DEEP GROOVE pressing.

I play-graded this album NM-. The mono sound is excellent, the soloist sings and the section is well balanced. There are no noticeable traces of surface noise.

Visually, under bright light, the vinyl still has a good shine, and it was hard to find any defect. I think I identified a faint hairline scratch on Side B, Track 1. I graded it NM-.
The cover is NOT excellent. The worst defect is a split covering one-half of the top edge. The color photo on the front shows well, but there is a speckle of age spots in the background. There are two spots under the album number were a label was removed. The back cover looks good, with very faint aging. I grade it VG.
NOTE: To stabilize the split, while letting you enjoy the album graphics, I will send the album in a clear 5 mil plastic outer sleeve, containing the original album cover AND the vinyl record which is inserted first into a double audiophile inner sleeve and then a white cardboard outer sleeve. The record label will be visible through cutouts.
The result is a clear plastic envelope the same size as a normal album, except twice as thick. The album graphic is displayed attractively in the front and the record label in the back. When you remove the record sleeve, it exposes all the information on the album cover.
The outer sleeve is polypropylene, which combines high clarity, heat resistance, moisture resistance and chemical resistance. If all of my albums had been stored like this for the last 40 years, the covers would all be NM with no splits!
