LEE MORGAN 1957 BLUE NOTE 1541 w/ Mobley RVG EAR LEX DG

This is a very well-preserved record with great mono sound. And a collector’s item beside.

Trumpeter Lee Morgan is beautifully recorded on this ultra-rare Blue Note original release. The supporting cast is Hank Mobley, tenor sax; Kenny Rodgers, alto sax; Paul Chambers, bass; Charlie Persip, drums; and Horace Silver, piano.

This monophonic recording was issued on Blue Note BLP 1541 in 1957. This is a DEEP GROOVE pressing with a hand-scribed RVG confirming that Rudy Van Gelder did the recording and the characteristic EAR in the deadwax area on both sides.

The tunes, all composed and arranged by Benny Golson and Owen Marshall, include:

Side A 1. “Whisper Not,” Golson. 2. “Latin Hangover,” Golson. 3. “His Sister,” Marshall.

Side B 1. “Slightly Hep,” Golson. 2. “Where Am I,” Golson. 3. “D’s Fink,” Marshall.

Morgan has gorgeous solos throughout. Hank Mobley always plays interesting jazz. Kenny Rodgers was ALL OVER his horn on “D’s Fink.” Paul Chambers plays on the bottom of his instrument and soloed nicely. Charlie Persip gave a good account of himself. Silver’s choruses on “Slightly Hep” and the last tune were especially sharp.

I play-graded this album VG++. Morgan’s explosive trumpet and musical ideas come through loud and clear; and the other musicians in the group are well-presented too. On the negative side, I heard a small pop on Side 2, Track 2, and in the very quiet sections, I detected surface noise under the music—but never enough to be more than noticeable.

Visually, the vinyl is still shiny, with some small paper scuffs, and perhaps a few micro scratches, but nothing to affect the music. There is little to no spindle wear. The grade is VG++.

The cover grades VG+. Morgan’s photograph on the front is still arresting, but there are a few white speckles in the black background 1) A slight crease in the upper right corner and 2) I think the five very small spots under the heading on the left side are caused by wear. The spine and bottom edge show some wear. All four corners have small dings. The back cover, which has a white background, is unmarred, but the record outline shows faintly in the top and bottom inch. There is a thumbnail-sized spot of glue residue on the right edge.
