ULTRA RARE ORIGINAL 1970 FIRST UK PRESSING (1Y/2Y Matrix) STEREO LP

LEGEND - "Legend" ('The Red Boot Album') - Very rare original 1970 UK first pressing (1Y/2Y matrix) vinyl LP released on the highly collectable Spiral Vertigo record label. The LP is housed in its original characteristic early 70's textured gatefold sleeve, complete with the original Black and White poly-lined Vertigo Spiral inner sleeve.

On offer here, from my own collection, is an original UK Swirl Vertigo label 1st pressing of the brilliant and classic self-titled Legend 1970 LP, more commonly known as 'The Red Boot Album', due to the Red Boot featured on the album sleeve!! Legend were fronted by the great Mickey Jupp. This is without doubt a truly RARE and fabulous early 1970's progressive rock album.

This is a very good playing copy of the classic 'Red Boot' LP by Legend from 1970. Released on the UK Vertigo swirl Label (catalogue no. 6360 019). This is an original UK Vertigo label first pressing. The matrix numbers on the run-off grooves are - side one - 6360019 1Y//3V420  11  4 - side two - 6360019 2Y//4V420  12  4. Absolutely essential record for any UK Vertigo label collector....This fabulous album is easily among the BEST and RAREST Vertigo label LP's ever released!! Don't miss it! Low Start and No Reserve.

The frontman and leader of Legend was Mickey Jupp, one of the finest British guitarists and R&B songwriters. His songs have been covered by Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, The Searchers and Gary Brooker and he's been backed on record by some of these musicians as a solo artist. This very rare 1970 album is probably Legend's best and consists of guitar driven vibrant three-minute R&B infused songs that lean more towards uptempo music rather than blues. Even so, there is a healthy cross-section of styles here that displays Jupp's versatility as a writer.

The delicious stinging guitar work that opens "Cross Country" hooks you from the first and this song is one of Legend's best and most representative. "Cheque Book" is leaner and incisive. It's no surprise that Dr.Feelgood covered it on their classic debut album, "Down By The Jetty". Jupp's wonderful sense of humour is evident on the more rock 'n' roll "My Typewriter" which, like most of the songs, employs some solid harmony vocals. This is followed by the aching romance of "Five Years" which benefits from a beautiful melody. The tracks mentioned are just some of the album's highlights, the songs and recordings are solid throughout, there really isn't a poor track on the album. Legend were a simply brilliant group and this is an amazing album, definitely a "lost masterpiece" from the early 70's British underground scene. 

Historical note's on Mickey Jupp and Legend:
"In the early 60s The Paramounts were the most popular band in the Southend area. Another popular band was The Orioles, led by Mickey Jupp. They played the same kind of R&B, but while The Paramounts got a record contract, The Orioles didn't. The band broke up in 1966, but Jupp returned in 1969 with a new band, Legend, who, as the first English band to get a contract with Bell Records, recorded one album, Legend, in a session that lasted only eight hours. They followed that with one gig at Staines, Middlesex and broke up just before the album's release. The album was an acoustic pop / R&B album with Jupp on vocals, guitar and piano, Chris East on vocals, twelve string guitar & harmonica, Steve Geer on string bass (on some songs played with a bow) and vocals and Nigel Dunbar on drums . This brilliant "unplugged" album stills sounds fresh today (please see my other listings for a copy of this rare LP).

Jupp still had a record contract, but no band: he got some help from the Procol camp. David Knights, who had just left Procol Harum, became Jupp's manager. With help from some old friends from Procol Harum, he recorded a single as Legend. The song is called Georgia George (Part One) and is a primitive rocker close in style to some of the rawest Paramounts tracks.

The story of Legend then continues when Jupp came to put together a new band. The new Legend had Jupp on vocals, guitar and piano, Bill Fifield on drums, Mo Witham on guitar and John Bobin on bass. They recorded an album called, once again, Legend, for Vertigo in 1970: it is known as 'The Red Boot Album' because of the red boot on the cover. It's a really great album, packed with wonderful melodic songs, ace Jupp vocals and inspired guitar work, beautifully produced by Tony Visconti for David Knights Productions."

Mega rare now...the 'Red Boot Album' is easily one of the best LP's released on the fabled British Vertigo label and would be a fabulous addition to any rock music or spiral Vertigo collection!! This great LP comes to you highly recommended and is a definite 'must have' for any collector of rare original vinyl LP's. The gatefold sleeve has some wear on the front, edges and spine...Please see picture provided. The vinyl has numerous light marks BUT still plays very well throughout with lovely clear sound. There are no jumps and no sticks...nothing too serious. Both sleeve and vinyl are graded VG. Low start with no reserve! Don't miss it!

Condition:

Vinyl: VERY GOOD (The vinyl retains it's shiny gloss and lustre. Flat and warp free. You can see numerous light surface marks, hairlines and tiny scratches, however these don't seriously affect the playback, BOTH SIDES PLAY VERY WELL ,with vibrant clear and warm sound. On playback there is only some very light surface noise in just a handful of places and a couple of minor little 'ticks' can be heard. No jumps and no sticks, nothing to seriously upset your listening experience. These original Vertigo 70's albums are famous for their excellent sound quality and this one is no exception.  Sounds great when the volume is cranked up loud!!)

Gatefold Sleeve: VERY GOOD (The thick textured gatefold sleeve is in generally very good condition. It does have a few light creases, small scuffs and tiny marks. However it does have significant rubbing wear on all edges and the spine. There are a few small sticker 'lifts' on the front and one more prominent 10mm sticker tear on the 'red boot' (please see the pictures provided). There is a tiny 8mm tear on the top edge along with some ring-wear and discolouration on the front and back. The wording along the spine is just readable. I would grade the sleeve at VG. Records Are Graded In The Following Way:

MINT: The record displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT: Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD: Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD: Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade

Packing Procedures: All LPs are securely and well packed in top quality material to avoid any unnecessary damage during transit. When posted the records are removed from the cover, if possible, and placed in a PVC outer protective sleeve to prevent sleeve splits in the post. I use brand new mailers, either the envelope style with thick stiffeners to prevent any sleeve bends in transit, or the "cruciform" style that wrap around the LP. I aim to dispatch all items within 48 hours of receiving payment. It is recommended that you choose the insurance option for higher value items. As stated above I cannot be held responsible for any item(s) lost or damaged in the post that are not shipped via insured / registered mail. I always obtain a certificate proof of posting receipt for every item sent, which will complete our transaction.
