Label/Format: CBS - rarer original intense orange and heavily textured, rough surfaces. Most-all are seen with smooth, paler surfaces which are repressings. Note also, this is a much rarer mono copy (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light+ and very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: M 63587.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 119 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: This famous album is not hard to find per se. But, mono UK originals are a different matter. By 1969 most new records issued were stereo only and had long since disappeared from the US where I feel sure this would not have been available in the single-channel mode.

Brief Info: The second album by this famed Canadian singer-songwriter. Well-known for his stark looks and voice, and music that can be described as downbeat to bleak. But hauntingly beautiful songs, this became a ‘bedsit’ favourite at the time and his songs have been covered countless times by many artists with whole tribute albums being issued. Jennifer Warnes issued an entire album of his songs entitled ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’ which is a reference high fidelity album of immense beauty that is more than worth checking out. Some of the best cover versions were recorded by Judy Collins and also worthy of investigation. This has to be his darkest album ever, for those unfamiliar, possibly quite hard to listen too first time. But just a few plays will open your mind to this man’s world, his sound is still unique with monotone voice and solemn, poetic words. Deep material of relationship, sometimes harrowing, this had the ingredients of being a poor-selling album, but it did okay. Cohen, often referred, and affectionally named ‘Laughing Lenny’ with tongue firmly in cheek, the old joke ‘How do you know when the party’s over?’ Answer: ‘When someone puts a Leonard Cohen album on’. Gloom and darkness rarely ever sounds this good. Brilliantly produced by Bob Johnston, he was employed to get the most atmosphere from these very downbeat and minimalistic songs - it works perfectly. A rare album in mono, most seen and offered are stereo pressings and the majority later ones, again the books give no sense of rarity for this in mono, they seem to be drifting further and further out-of-touch. This a lovely copy that plays superbly with little unwanted. The single channel mode makes this sound even richer and deliberately ‘gloomy’. Along with the man’s debut album, this is indispensable and essential Cohen, the man at his darkest and most compelling best.

Cover Grade and Format: EX, a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges but only the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group. This includes its original orange unlined promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Not a great deal to fault here: the laminate is clean with a lovely shine and fully adhered with no lifting or blistering. Very slight traces of friction rubs under light and any creasing is confined to the edges as a meager few fine hairlines. The white very slightly darkened to off-white over the years but not really yellowed or toned, just natural darkening that gives a slightly more ‘mature’ look to this vintage cover, now over 40-years-old. Minimal and somewhat stark artwork giving clues of what to expect inside.

Cover Back: The back has little wear and few marks. Two small tone spot areas and odd fainter traces also (but look hard). No ringwear and barely any creasing the laminate end on the spine clean and solid too. Both sides look real nice and just right for their considerable vintage.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Odd minor surface rub, the back panel every-so-sightly thickened, this being the resting edge, it’s pretty normal of course (but minor).

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Just a couple of tiny laminate chips, that apart, little else to fault bar a couple of mega-fine hairline creases. Solid, straight, uncompressed, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: Just a light rub on the bottom right, the others are all crisp and sharp and show little.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this original mono late 60s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: The original unlined orange promo inner is included. No edge splits (or repairs) and an ultra neat window, this looks very nice. Mild creasing to one corner but clean and still fresh. The print quality is less than wonderful but that was not unusual.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ with any blemishes being ultra fine, few and very faint indeed. Clearly played with the utmost care with exceptional clean playing surfaces. A mono copy that has more than survived the Dansette era unscathed. I would imagine anyone choosing a mono record at the back-end of the 60s still used mono equipment. Hence they are likely to be affected by blunt heavy tracking inferior pickups that left their marks so freely. Remember, just one arm drop or jolt and there’s another deep scratch that ruined (or potentially wrote-off) another mono classic. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by lovely clean sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful gloomy, but beautiful record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Practically all is focused and devoid of ‘mono noises’ or crackle from either/or speaker. Remember too, mono records were not principally designed to be played on better stereo equipment and its testament to the original owner when they can be and still be fully enjoyed. At their best they are wonderful, at their worst, terrible and unlistenable. As I always recommend, do not buy any mono without a full and guaranteed play-grade. Even clean looking mono records can disappoint, just one play with a worn-out stylus and the damage is done. The grooves shredded and the sound clarity wrecked and irrepairable. I remember an old school-friend had just such a record player and I had to make excuse after excuse not to play my records on it. Few copies will outperform this early mono pressing significantly I feel sure and do not under-estimate how much harder this is to find in that mode. Far fewer were issued and only for a very limited period. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
