Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with a very deep shade of orange. Any of the tiny few spindle marks are very fine and faint, hardly any on side one at all. A copy hardly even played and carefully looked-after on all the evidence.

Cat Number: S 69004.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. A very good weight for this one, many seen are wafer thin.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The album itself sold well in the UK and is not too difficult to find. But early copies included the very small booklet and in such superg condition are far harder to find. Also this copy includes that more interesting CBS inner that promotes the cassette and 8-Track tapes – the latter being long defunct. Not so easy to find with a decent cover either which has always proved to be prone to wear. This is a superb complete example.

Brief Info: The third Leonard Cohen album with more superb, trademark downbeat songs. One of the world’s greatest lyric and songwriters with his very distinctive monotone voice and sombre approach to his delivery. The age-old joke, “How do you know when the party is over?” – Answer: when the host put’s on a Leonard Cohen album. The ultimate bedsit singer, his early album’s especially are incredibly bleak – but truly beautiful in their own unique way. His guitar style is distinctive and addictive, his voice suits the song material perfectly and for this type of artist, he is justifiably popular. A great Canadian songwriter and this one of his very best albums. This too a very early complete example, not so easy to find with that little small book inside, which is immaculate, and such a clean cover and record.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the small booklet and CBS ‘tape’ format promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Finding these with such little wear is difficult. A somewhat basic cover but so prone to all forms of wear. This front is clean, fresh and attractive with no sticker issues or rubbing. A few almost pin-prick size marks just to the ledt of Cohen’s head, but these hardly even shows with normal viewing. Just the one noteworthy crease, a small one on the bottom left corner, this apart, it would have received that extra plus.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same with a few light surface creases that with normal viewing, hardly even show. The lack of ring wear is a significant bonus on a black cover that rarely avoids it.

Top Edge: Straight, solid and any rub traces are tiny and faint.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear. No thickening or burring and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, and most-all very straight with minimal compression still very white. All text is perfect and unworn as seen on my close-up. The bottom corner has taken a jolt in the past with the merest hint of evidence on the spine and corner.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint, all retain excellent or better shape. As stated above, a small crease on the bottom left which is away from the actual corner tip.

Cover Summary: In terms of an exciting cover, this isn’t the most amazing of designs, but that’s how it is. The good news is the lack of significant wear and this being the main issue for collectors. The small corner crease is the main issue for the more discerning collector.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down for some moderate discolouration which few inners escape this kind of age. An unlined CBS inner that promotes records one side but the other is more interesting for the music historian. This explains the concept of two tape formats, being the quite familiar music cassette and possibly the lesser-known 8-Track tape that was often used in cars during the 1960s and 70s. The latter being long defunct and in it’s day considered quite up-market. In terms of real wear, barely any and fully intact with no repairs and hardly any creasing.

The Booklet: PRACTICALLY MINT: a 12-page black and white booklet in the style of the main cover. Not a lyric book, it just gives some sparse credits information. All the white paper is untoned or aged and put simply – immaculate. Held together with the two original large staples that are large and as solid as when made with no rusting. No creasing and this looks hardly even touched and I would be confident, this has not seen light-of-day for decades – same probably goes for the record. This is quite hard to find and often when seen, very tatty and badly aged or torn. This little scarce booklet is nigh-on unbeatable

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker off full Mint(-) which I was very tempted to grade. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Records this age seldom get a great deal better. Visually a lovely record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Cohen classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Mainly acoustic guitar and vocals, so few hiding places for any unwanted sounds, so glad to state, there are none needed. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. I am a big Cohen fan, I guess the mood has to be right, his songs of melancholy and sadness are ultimately rewarding and captivating. Few others even come close to matching this man’s work in the downbeat market. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
