All boxes signed for in quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and traceable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

ALSO: I now apply the Ebay ‘2-day’ rule for non-payment to keep things moving – cash-flow is important for any small business.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate, ultra clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: This has some wavy, but smooth movement on rotation, this more noticeable on side one. However, this caused no tracking issues or audio affect when played on my Linn LP12. I doubt if it will cause any issues for any turntable worthy of a name as long as tracking exceeds 1.7 grams which I tested at that reduced weight for my cartridge. I only own the one turntable, so I could not test on anything else. There are no sudden jerks, so this really should be fine for most.

Rarity: The album itself sold well in the UK and is not too difficult to find. But early copies included a small booklet, and that is seen less often. Also this record appears hardly played and offers top sound quality as is even more crucial on the more sparse acoustic albums.

Brief Info: The third Leonard Cohen album with more superb, typically intense songs. One of the world’s greatest lyric and songwriters with his very distinctive monotone voice and sombre mood for his material. The ultimate bedside singer, his early album’s especially are incredibly downbeat – but truly beautiful in their own unique way. His guitar style is distinctive and addictive, his voice suits the song material perfectly and for this type of artist, he is justifiably popular. A great Canadian songwriter, sadly now gone, this one of his very best albums.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the small booklet and rarer CBS cassette and 8-track promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Highly prone to wear, this one of the least worn examples I have seen for years. Barely creased – one tiny faint half moon and a trace near the top left edge – no rubbing. It appears hardly handled due to the lack of fingermarks on the revealing matt black surfaces and has no sticker issues. Being cover-protected almost from new has impressively preserved these uncompromising surfaces.

Cover Back: The back is practically with a small crease on the top right corner tip. A mere couple of fine spine edge hairlines, any marks or blemishes tiny and ultra light. The lack of ring wear each side is a huge plus for this one.

Top Edge: Very faint and few rub traces, still straight and solid.

Bottom Edge: Light and patchy rubbing, again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with any thickening gentle and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, very close to straight with hardly any compression, one tiny light dink trace being critical, also still white and fresh. All text perfect and unworn as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs are very small and light. I think the small spine top crease is most likely in manufactured and this is certainly devoid of any heavy knocks with better than excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult very dark cover in super condition and amongst the least wear I have ever seen. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined CBS inner made with very thin paper, so the lack of edge splits is more unusual, but good news. This promotes the 1970s cassette and 8-track cartridges which is actually quite interesting to read. Hardly creased, but quite lightly aged with the usual darkening of the seam area adhesive. It includes the PATENT No 1,125,555 code.

The Booklet: EXCELLENT(++): a 12-page black and white booklet in the style of the main cover. Not a lyric book but it just gives some sparse credits information. Very small (3.75 x 5.5 inches) with two central original staples that remain solid and clean with barely a trace of tarnishing. Clean, fresh pages with just one light semi-crease to one inside sheet, any crinkle of handling traces little and light as well. This book is often missing and elusive, I have seen few better than this, and is guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): but as stated further up, it is not flat with some wavy, but smooth movement on rotation, this mostly as side one is played. But this still proved easy to track for my LP12 and has no audio affect. No sudden movements, the rotation is smoothly ‘wavy’ and should cause no issues for most turntables as long as tracking is not excessively light (e.g. below 1.7 grams). A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors who have no issues with a record not perfectly flat.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant third album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault in terms of audio quality. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Again, this is largely acoustic and quite sparse, so the odd contact blemish is near impossible to avoid totally. Not flat as stated twice already, but no tracking issues* on my equipment listed below. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended as long as the movement on rotation is not an issue.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
