Description

ULTRA RARE Leonard Cohen double-sided Acetate.  This is of UK manufacture for CBS Records (the admittedly poor definition image below demonstrates the presence of the late 60’s / early 70’s CBS logo).  The acetate is approx. 10” in size but the playing surface is actually cut like a 45 with one track on Side One and two tracks on Side Two (i.e. a maxi 45 / EP).  The acetate is STEREO with both sides listed as playing at 33 and a 1/3 but in fact play at 45rpm.  The acetate is (as usual) undated however, I would estimate an age of 1968-1973.  What makes me think this is very early is the fact that the artist is listed a ‘Lenard Cohen’ on both sides.  Obviously, the early Leonard Cohen LPs were relatively successful in the UK thus you wonder if this dates it to roughly the launch of his singing career (in the UK) when the individual who cut this acetate would not have known the artist from any other.  Indeed all the tracks on this acetate are from his debut LP.  The acetate is listed as an ‘Advance Copy – Not For Sale’ which makes me conclusively think that this dates from 1968 and was circulated within CBS to help launch his UK career.

Condition:

Vinyl and Labels

This is in simply beautiful condition.  One of the best condition acetates I have ever seen.  Normally these have been roughly handled however, I confidently grade this as EXCELLENT+ condition.  It is simply astonishing that this has survived in this condition.  I have played the acetate and it is clear that it has rarely been played (as you will know an acetate has a limited playing life and the grooves will wear out).  The sound is crystal clear.

The labels are also in remarkable condition.  Quite often the glue they use to stick the labels on is overpowering and results in degradation of the labels to the point at which they can’t be read.  These labels are immaculate.  I would argue that they aren’t even discoloured.  Again, this is probably an indication that they haven’t been handled much.

This acetate comes in a plain brown sleeve with a poly inner (like you find on old 10” LPs).

Final Remarks:

Any Cohen fan/collector would be proud to have this piece in their collection.  There is no way that even the strictest grader of records could fail to be impressed with the condition of this piece.  I would go as far as to say this is simply NEAR MINT.  I can’t see how another exists in this condition.
