Leonard Cohen : The Songs Of Leonard Cohen A5 / B3 Repress 1971 CBS Records
This classic debut album plays with a precision and definition you so rarely find today. The clarity of sound is immaculate and there is basically no intrusion on the audio. This is of course a very quiet record for the vast majority and I cannot emphasise enough just how clean and precise the audio is. It is from a collection I purchased recently and the previous owner certainly knew how to look after his records! Every track here grades as Mint or Mint- with only one grading as Near Mint and even that could be considered a little harsh!
The cover has been so well preserved and has kept its shape and structure perfectly. Just look at the spine! The plain inner sleeve is in great condition also
I believe this to be a repressing from 1971 with an A5 / B3 matrix and where the CBS logo is a little lower down on the front cover.

Visual description
The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only find one faint 'line' on S1 and 2/3 ultra faint hairlines on S2. The CBS labels are so clean and I'm not sure there is any spindle wear! Maybe a couple of mega faint traces.
Play Grading
The acoustic intro on the classic 'Suzanne' plays beautifully with no intrusion and Cohen's opening vocal has just the one static tick. From then on it plays with a clarity and warmth that is second to none, it is so clean and clinical you wouldn't believe it! I cannot overstate just how pristine the audio is and Mint- is very much deserved.
'Master Song' is just as impressive and again the clarity and depth of the audio can only be described 'as new'. No exaggeration there is no background not even a dust tick and Mint this time is fair.
I'm already running out of superlatives! 'Winter Lady' keeps up the standard with literally no intrusion. Every note is so sharp and precise - is it a bell tolling? The sound is superb! Mint
'The Stranger Song' has one mega quiet static on the opening vocal but I can hardly downgrade it because of that! It then plays as per the preceding tracks and sonically it cannot be faulted. Ok a handful of barely audible statics around the halfway mark but in essence stunning precision from start to finish. Mint-
'Sisters Of Mercy' completes the side with unbelievable clarity once more. This side plays like it has never seen a turntable before! Every vocal and instrumental passage plays with sublime clarity and despite being the final track on the side the sound quality is not affected in any way. A little 'busier' than the other tracks the audio definition is still so impressive. One super quiet static near the end and I will say Mint- for this one...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The run in on S2 has a couple of light whooshy static sounds but as soon as 'So Long, Marianne' begins the playback is perfect. The opening vocal section is flawless and the first chorus with the female backing is just as strong and clear. It continues in the same way with no intrusion and again Mint- is reflective of the audio on offer here. A classic track.
The acoustic intro on 'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye' is 'as new' and the first vocal is equal to that. This high end standard is kept up through every section and there is not so much as a single static tick let alone anything worse. Mint
'Stories Of The Street' plays very clearly and there is no interference. If anything there is just a minimal touch of vocal distortion here and there but so so minor and 99/100 people would not mention it! The clarity is still very impressive and Near Mint is a fair grade.
'Teachers' is free of any background - again the sonic quality is incredible for a vinyl of this age - crystal clear audio with no intrusion whatsoever. Mint
The gentle acoustic intro on 'One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong' is flawless and the opening vocal is on the same level with no dust ticks, ticks etc. It continues to play with exceptional clarity for a final track - every section as clean and precise as the day it was first released. This truly is a STUNNING album and clarity such as this is so rarely found. This Mint version closes the album perfectly. Not one barely audible static even!
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in superb condition with very little wear. Only the bottom edge has some rubbing and the top edge and spine are perfect. So rare for a spine from '71 to look this good! The corners have hardly any wear and the opening edge is near perfect with only a couple of minor 'crimps' next to each other. The front cover is so clean with a couple of minor specks near the bottom edge and a faint 'line' by the top right corner. The back cover is in pristine condition - a fantastic example overall.
The plain white die-cut inner sleeve is in great condition with just one small mark near the bottom edge. No side splits and barely any creasing.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Many thanks.
All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
