The Brief To produce a clean transfer from a vinyl LP onto CD.
The Process After sourcing the disc it is cleansed on the Pro-Ject VC-S record cleaner.
Transfer of programme content at 24-bit 96kHz resolution using a state of the art analogue to digital converter for maximum quality to a Mac using a Rega Planar 1 turntable.
Assessment and analysis of music file utilising studio quality iZotope RX 6 Standard software.
Sensitive reduction of surface noise and removal of undesirable elements such as clicks, crackle, rumble and other various artefacts related to the pressing process. Retention of existing detail being of paramount importance. Each track then painstakingly headphone checked in real time to further reduce or eliminate remaining undesirable elements where possible (see screenshot of some of the kind feedback comments I have received).

The Project and outcome

One of the best, if not the best in my opinion, big band direct-to-disc jazz albums, and a true audiophile classic.

Recorded in July of 1977 at Capitol Records in Hollywood, California Les Brown and His Band of Renown Goes Direct to Disc is up there with the finest direct-to-disc offerings of any catalogue. Incredibly, the disc was purchased brand new and still in its original shrink wrap after 40 years with a result which is sonically superb. The disc still underwent cleaning, even though it had never been opened, to remove any trace of residual release compounds used in the pressing process. Recording - maximum input signal without clipping at 24-bit 96kHz resolution to retain maximum impact and detail. Minimal post production work was required as its an excellent and clean pressing.

A simultaneous tape recording of the session was later released on cd in 1991 by BBC Records (CJCD 834) but is no substitute for the direct cut release, and although it contains alternative takes of some of the tracks it lacks the depth and tightness of sound achieved on the vinyl. However...as a bonus, I am including the commercially released cd so you can experience the alternative takes (note that the cd will be supplied without a standard jewel case to save on unnecessary bulk).

I can't say enough good things about the qualities of this direct-to-disc recording - 'Tickle Toe' will knock your socks off!

The Record (extract)

The producer picks up the telephone near his left hand. In an upstairs cubicle separated from the control room by soundproofed ceiling, shock-proofed walls, safe from sudden interruption an engineer and his assistant await the call. “Cue lathes,” the producer speaks softly into his telephone. 

At his signal twin turntables begin to rotate. On each is a black, acetate disc, mirror smooth. When the discs are spinning at a steady 33 1/3 RPM, the recording engineers acknowledge the producer’s signal “Cues.”

The producer then raises his right hand, a warning to the mixers beside him to check the control settings, a warning also to everyone beyond the wide window of the control room to freeze into silence. “Begin Spiral,” he says into his telephone. 

Twin cutting heads lower to the surfaces of the spinning discs to etch hairline lead-in grooves from the outer edges of the discs. In the control room the producer counts the seconds. “…seven, eight, nine…” 

In the large studio the band waits in tight clusters, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, around suspended microphones. Their instruments are raised, their feet firm, their breath held. A sculptured band. 

This 24-bit 96kHz capture encompasses all the dynamism, power, depth and subtleties of the original vinyl.
