The most commercially successful solo singer to be identified with the girl group sound, Lesley Gore reeled off a number of big hits all through the ‘60s. But, after six years and eleven Top 40 hits on Mercury Records, she found herself at the end of the decade without a record contract. Bob Crewe, who had produced some of her last Mercury singles, signed her to his own label, but nothing clicked. Exit Lesley Gore, hitmaker. And enter Lesley Gore, composer. It wasn't a new role, exactly -she had written before- but something spurred her to write, write, write during those early days of the ‘70s. In 1972, producer Joe Porter brought Lesley Gore back to the studio and Someplace Else Now was released. The songs scarcely resemble Lesley's classic girl-group items. ‘Out of Love’ would have fit nicely into an early Carly Simon album. ‘She Said That’, the single, is what's left when you drain all the smarm out of something like Charlene's ‘I've Never Been to Me’. These songs remind us that Lesley Gore’s art was always based on a certain anguished undercurrent, even as a teenager. Some of the cuts on Someplace Else Now reinforce the artistic personality that Gore had already projected. There haven't been that many teen-idols who have been able to express themselves deeply within their pop/corporate framework and then be able to take this sense of style into adulthood. Lesley Gore’s sense of style resided largely in the ability to raise most of the songs she sang up into the range of believable emotion. The best example of that on Someplace Else Now is ‘What Did I Do Wrong,’ which she sings with as much flair as her hit ‘You Don’t Own Me.’ The album also shows Lesley attempting to extend her string of hits on songs like ‘Don’t Wanna Be One,’ ‘Mine’ and ‘Be My Life’. Not quite ‘60s pop, yet not really a standard ‘70s singer-songwriter effort, the album baffled the few that heard it and went ignored by the rest. But in Lesley’s case it reminds us that some of her best moments have been on songs that weren’t hits, and it was on these non-hits, perhaps, that her personality most clearly stands out.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps (EXCEPT for the promo stamp)

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
