Here is practically everything tenor sax giant Lester Young recorded for the Alladin label in the mid- to late-'40s, and the most obvious summation of the contrasting sessions is to say flat-out that the leader is a jazz genius, and everything that he recorded is worth a listen. That's true, but there are many other reasons why this is such an interesting collection. Jazz is an art form relying both on co-operation between group members as well as the notion of mastermind geniuses that could blow incredibly over just about any kind of band, good or bad. Both concepts are at work here, but that is not to suggest any of the bands are bad by any means. Young was at the close of his first decade as a recording artist when the first Alladin session took place in 1945. He had just finished what was apparently a horrifying stint in the army prior to relocating to the West Coast and becoming involved with the company. Over the course of the next four years, he was taped with pick-up bands, his own touring group, and finally a kind of hand-picked group that the producers came up with. The tenor man is in great form throughout, and so is his accompaniment. Young seems to play with absolute genius while seeming totally relaxed; the younger players, on the other hand, are putting their all into maintaining rhythmic and harmonic precision. It never fails to be a good combination. One of the most fascinating things about this collection, which would make it worth owning even if not a note of the leader's tenor saxophone was present, is the presence of many classic swing, bop, and modern players at formative stages of their career and already playing beautifully. The leader apparently liked to just wander into these sorts of sessions, figuring out the songs to be played at the last minute, providing no instruction as to arrangements, and totally winging the beginnings and endings. The liner notes mention this repeatedly as if there were perhaps a connection between this casualness and the man's perceived rough psychological state, but the real significance is that this is such a typical approach to making good jazz. Those that feel that the best jazz is created in the most relaxed, undemanding circumstances with workaday rather than "star" players will find this set represents the best of both worlds. The music is created in just this manner, yet it would be hard to pretend that the players involved are just the average jazzers, even looking beyond Young to his sidemen, many of them teenagers. Pianist Dodo Marmarosa was only 19 years old when the sides he played on were cut -- but he was still Dodo Marmarosa, the importance of which cannot really be understood until one experiences a drunken Italian jazz fan joyously yelling the man's name at three in the morning. Drummer Roy Haynes, who is simply one of the best percussionists jazz has to offer, is heard here at the age of 21, proving beyond a doubt that he had developed his light touch and learned to swing well before being handed the right to vote. The groups play a mix of standards and Young's spontaneous "riff" tunes, the meat of his repertoire and a basic essence of swing jazz as well. Highlights include "East of the Sun," "Sax-O-Be-Bop," and "It's Only a Paper Moon." The music is so spontaneous that it is impossible not to get caught up in the creative magic. Jazz guitar fans can be alerted to the interesting presence of players such as Freddie Green, Irving Ashby, Fred Lacey, and the marvelous Chuck Wayne. Green had been Young's cohort in the Basie band, so it is old home night when the two get together. The ever-so-steady Green is also the model for the rhythm approach the other guitarists take, although Lacey has different ideas, revealing a slightly more modern concept that surely involved reaching over and turning the amplifier up. The pianist Sadik Hakim is present here under his given name of Argonne Thornton; he is an interesting player who spent time on the Canadian scene as well as in the U.S., irritating some jazz fans by claiming to have been the actual composer of some of Thelonious Monk's compositions. Drum historians will also find this collection to be of interest for further reasons besides the previously mentioned presence of Haynes. Johnny Otis is heard here, also quite green on the scene and still in the swing mode before becoming a famous R&B bandleader. Chico Hamilton drums on the 1946 session, forming a superb rhythm section with bassist Red Callender and the lyrically swinging pianist Joe Albany.
