Lester Young was without a doubt one of the most influential Tenor Sax players of all time, without him there would have been no Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, or Al Cohn; all were strongly influenced by his playing. When he joined the Basie Band however, there were many detractors and his playing did not get immediate recognition. His lighter tone and unfamiliar style of improvisation did not sit comfortable with those who were used to the heavier sound of Coleman Hawkins and Hershel Evans. Basie who was made of sterner stuff realised that Lester was the sound of the future.
EPIC have made the reviewers job very difficult with a sleeve note that doesn't give recording dates or personnel or for that matter even the names of the bands featured.
The only thing we know for sure is that Lester Young plays on all the tracks! A few things are instantly recognised, vocals from Jimmy Rushing and some solo spots with the Basie Band, but it would be a brave reviewer who attempted to name all the musicians. I suspect Dickie Wells plays Trombone on some of the tracks and that a whole host of other famous jazz names are included. My guess is that all the tracks are pre-war, probably 1936 to 1940 vintage. If that is so, it is interesting to note that his unique style was already fully shaped before his period of fame with Jazz at the Philharmonic in the late 40's and early 50's. Throughout the two discs his contribution is instantly recognisable, but the listener must take into account that many of these tracks were not aimed at a specialist jazz audience, but at the "pop" market of the day., Lester Young has left a legacy of wonderful music. If the record company had worked as well as Lester, this would have been an even better record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE RECORD # 1 AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) WE GRADE RECORD # 2 AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(c) The records have a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(d) The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(e) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 4:1.
(f) The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years! [only one baggy present]
(g) True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
(h) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine
- Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold
- The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers
- A visible water stain affects the area about 1.1/2 inch wide along the bottom seam (VISIBLE ONLY ON THE INSIDE GATEFOLD); there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams (yet)
- No ring wear
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
- No writing
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
