According to the person from whom we acquired this item (a good friend of ours and a very fine gentleman), this album comes from the estate of the legendary Rock critic, journalist, liner notes writer and freelancing talent scout Al Aronowitz (1928-2005) best known for introducing Bob Dylan to The Beatles in 1964. Aronowitz was the original manager of The Velvet Underground, getting the band their first gig in the auditorium of the high school in Summit, New Jersey (The Velvet Underground stole Aronowitz's tape recorder and dumped him weeks later when they met Andy Warhol) . In a historically infamous episode known as "I want to hold your bong", Aronowitz introduced Bob Dylan to the Beatles in a New York City hotel room on August 28, 1964. According to his own journal entries, at this meeting he brought a marijuana joint which would be the first pot smoked by the Beatles. So...if you are wondering who was responsible for "tripping" the Beatles into recording all those mind-blowing, consciousness-expanding psychedelic masterpieces such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album or Abbey Road, seek no further. It was the Man who owned this fine piece.

Formed in 1967, this short-lived act featured Michael Martin Murphey (b. 13 March 1945, Dallas, Texas, USA; guitar/vocals) and Owen Castleman (b. Farm Branch, Texas, USA; guitar/vocals), who had already performed together as the Texas Twosome. Having adopted the respective roles of Travis Lewis and Boomer Clarke, they were augmented by Ken Bloom (guitar), John London (bass) and John Raines (bass). The quintet was signed by Colgems, the label which launched the Monkees, in part because London was a friend and ex-colleague of the latter group’s Michael Nesmith. The Lewis And Clarke Expedition was a promising pop/country collection but although it contained a minor hit single, ‘I Feel Good (I Feel Bad)’, sales were far from encouraging and the band split up in 1968. Murphey remained signed to Screen Gems as a contract songwriter, penning ‘What Am I Doing Hanging ’Round?’ for the Monkees, and ‘Calico Silver’ for Kenny Rogers And The First Edition. He returned to Texas in the early 70s and subsequently forged a highly successful solo career.

You know an album's going to be great when you find yourself coming back to listen to its entirety over and over. That's exactly what any true music lover will realize after they first hear this. It's a true product of the late '60s, but could also easily be from the early '70s. It's too bad the talented songwriters and musicians that made up this band didn't get more exposure and create more albums. Or, maybe it's true that you can't a masterpiece more than once.
The songs range far and wide in variety, subject, and mood, and the band handles each with true mastery. "Windy Day" is as sweet a song ever made, using a Dixieland bridge to pep up the happiness. You realize that this was not your average '60s rock band when you experience the real gems like "Spirit of Argyle High" and "Everybody Loves a Fire", whose production, instrumentation, and scores are truly the work of geniuses. A few reveal why Michael Nesmith had a connection to the band, as they have a geniune Monkees-ish quality, with every bit of the Monkees' gusto.
Is some of it a little corny? Indeed. That's exactly the point of many of the tracks. But it's also honestly believable and highly listenable, and it's far more pure than 99% of what's been produced in the 21st Century.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).
(b) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER:
COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel (BARELY VISIBLE)
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (BARELY VISIBLE)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
