Mega-rare album by experimental vocalist Kerstin Stahl that contains avant garde and electronic compositions from the Swedish sound poetry school along with a selection of early proto-avant works by Ives. Bodin's piece combines Stahl's experimental vocal techniques with electronic processing and multitracking to create a stunning text-sound composition. The Ives works were selected for their pioneering use of methods later adopted by the sound poets, such as imitations of sounds from the streets, cut-up quotations from folk songs and hymns, and atonality; the pianist is Kerstin Aberg. Includes insert booklet with multilingual notes by Johnson and texts used in the recordings.
Bodin is a Swedish visual artist and avant garde composer who studied under Lennart Wenstrom, worked with Goran Sundqvist, and served as chairman of the Fylkingen society which supports experiments in music, sound poetry, and theater; he directed the Stockholm Electronic Music Studio (aka EMS) where Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Per Norgard, Sten Hansson, Tamas Ungvary, Richard Kostelanetz, and Karl-Birger Blomdahl pioneered electroacoustic music, with Bengt-Emil Johnson he helped found the text-sound movement (Ake Hodell, Emmett Williams, Fluxus, John Cage, Henri Chopin, Bernard Heidsieck, Francoise Janicot, Poetry Out Loud, Broken Music, Charles Amirkhanian, Clark Coolidge, Francois Dufrene, Robert Ashley, Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs, Kenneth Gaburo, Joan La Barbara, etc.), and he served a residency at Mills College's famous experimental music department where Pauline Oliveros, Morton Subotnick, Steve Reich, Donald Buchla, Terry Riley, Anthony Braxton, Pandit Pran Nath, Gordon Mumma, and Frederic Rzewski have worked. Ives was a wealthy insurance businessman and a visionary early modernist composer admired by Arnold Schoenberg; he would become influential to Henry Cowell, John Cage, Aaron Copeland, Conlon Nancarrow, and Milton Babbitt.
