Additional Information about Free Form Patterns by Lightnin' Hopkins (LP, Feb-1968, International Artists)
Condition/Notes: I am THRILLED to offer this rarity for auction! I was diggin’ around in my room and found this record that I totally forgot I had! It has been in my collection for many years, and have not listened to in many years since. But from what I recall, it played well. No skips or jumps however, it may have that vintage surface noise that most old records do but nothing that overpowers the listening pleasure. I would say the vinyl to be a strong VG. Labels show spindle trails so the record was loved. It is an original 1968 International Artists label IALP # 6 out of Houston Texas. The cover is solid and in VG+ condition showing just slight aging on the front black border and the the back of the cover is white and does not show foxxing, aging or ring! Simply amazing condition for a vintage rarity as this! Also, I noticed a few surprises on this record that I did not recognize before. That being Mr. Hopkins name is spelled 3 different ways, on the psychedelic cover his name is spelled, LIGHTNING, then on the back of the cover his first name is spelled ‘LIGHTIN’ lastly if you look at the label his first name reads: LIGHTNIN’ which is the most common spelling. However I was told that his given first name is LIGHTIN. Another surprise to me was that a legendary psych band from the Houston area played on this record known as ‘THE 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS’ How cool is that! This find is a truly historical blues artifact and by a true blues legend who has inspired many such as Billy Gibbons, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter just to name a few! Also on that label's roster was the psychedelic group 13th Floor Elevators, which, by 1968, had basically disbanded. For this session, producer Lelan Rogers (Kenny's brother) teamed Hopkins up with Elevators drummer Danny Thomas and bassist Duke Davis. While not as revolutionary as John Lee Hooker's sessions with Canned Heat, Free Form Patterns steers clear of the late-'60s psychedelic trappings that screwed up such similar sessions as Electric Mud. No one tried to bend Hopkins to fit a foreign musical approach on Free Form Patterns; he made the music bend to him. ~ Al Campbell
