Diese Veröffentlichung von Lightnin' Hopkins "Soul Blues" komplettiert die Analogue-Productions-Serie von 25 Stereo-Neuauflagen des Prestige-Labels. 49 der 50 Titel (25 Stereo, 25 Mono) dieser Serie wurden durch Kevin Gray von Cohearent Audio von den originalen analogen Bändern neu gemastert. Für "Soul Blues" dagegen erstellte Ryan Smith von Sterling Sound eine 24Bit/192Khz hi-res-Datei durch eine Aufnahme von einer sauberen Original-LP.
Dies wurde nötig, weil sich das zum Mastern zur Verfügung gestellte Band selbst als Aufnahme von einer LP und nicht als Original erwies, das Band ist seit den frühen 1970er Jahren verschollen. Smith nahm deshalb die Original-LP, machte eine neue Aufnahme und überarbeitete sie sorgfältigst, um die verbleibenden minimalen Störgeräusche zu eliminieren. Anschließend masterte er das Album von der hi-res-Datei für LP und SACD.
»Wir sind verblüfft von der Qualität,« kommentiert Chad Kassem, der CEO von Acoustic Sounds und Analogue Productions. »Da das ursprüngliche Originalband verloren ist, ist jetzt eine Kopie von einer Original-LP das neue Master. Nur da, wo das Original-Masterband verloren oder beschädigt ist und uns keine andere Wahl bleibt, beziehen wir auch die beste noch vorhandene Quelle in unsere Erwägungen ein – jedoch nur, wenn diese es vom Klang her auch wert ist. Was in diesem Fall eindeutig zutrifft.«
Lightnin' Hopkins. ein echter Poet des Blues, war ein Meister langer, hintergründig schalkhafter Geschichten, die er oft genug an Ort und Stelle im Aufnahmestudio erfand. Der erste Song auf diesem Album, "I'm Going to Build Me A Heaven Of My Own", beschreibt eine Begegnung mit einem bärtigen Mann, der behauptet, Jesus Christus zu sein. Hopkins drückt auch Willie Dixons "My Babe", Smokey Hoggs "Too Many Drivers" und anderen Songs seinen persönlichen Stempel auf.

This release of Lightnin' Hopkins "Soul Blues" completes the series of 25 Prestige label stereo reissues from Analogue Productions. Of the 50 titles (25 stereo, 25 mono) in this reissue series, 49 of them were mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog tape. For "Soul Blues" Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound created a 24/192K hi-res file from a needle drop on a clean original LP.
This was done because the tape supplied for mastering proved to be from a needle drop itself, not the original, which has been lost since the early 1970s. Smith took the original LP, did a new needle drop and meticulously worked to eliminate the minimal tics and pops that remained. Then he mastered the album for LP and SACD from the hi-res file.
»We are amazed by the quality," says Chad Kassem, Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions CEO. "Now that the tape is lost, an original LP copy is now the master. Only in cases where the original master tape is lost or damaged and where we feel that we have no other choice, do we consider using the best source that remains. But we'd only do that if that source was sonically worth it. In this case, it most definitely is.«
A true poet of the blues, Lightnin' Hopkins was a master of tall, tongue-in-cheek tales, often made up on the spot in the recording studio. The first song on this album "I'm Going to Build Me a Heaven of My Own", describes an encounter with a bearded man claiming to be Jesus Christ. Hopkins also puts his personal stamp on Willie Dixon's "My Babe" and Smokey Hogg's "Too Many Drivers", among others.
