Hopkins had been a prolific recording artist in the decade following his first sessions in 1948. His stark, functional guitar style and rich Texas drawl made his work instantly recognizable. The inheritor of a blues tradition that went back to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander, he was an idiosyncratic musician, at his best when playing alone. His predecessors' work was reflected in his first album session, recorded by Sam Charters in January 1959. Not having recorded commercially for several years, Lightnin' was in serious mood, resulting in a set of masterful performances that carried more weight than his later, frequently arbitrary sessions.

This is one of the finest early Lightnin’ Hopkins works, and it is probably the one which is closest in style, approach and texture to genuine Delta Blues than anything he ever attempted - before OR after. Basically, this is Lightnin’ - plus the guitar - in a decidedly scaled-down, austere setting, which allows his voice to stretch and express himself much more than when backed by a combo. Please note that this album SHOULD NOT be confused with the similar-sounding title on an Everest label which is his "narrative" album, the spoken-word album (one of two he recorded, the other one for Prestige) ruminating on his long career. This is a 100% musical album, and does not include much narration, other than that interspersed throughout the songs. The songs are: In the evening as the sun goes down - Trouble in Mind - Mama and Papa Hopkins - The Foot Race is on - That Gambling Life - When the Saints go marchin’ in - Get off my toe - 75 Highway - Bottle up and go - Short-haired woman - So long baby - Santa Fe Blues. A rare album , exceedingly tough to find in this shape.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                   THE COVER

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
