LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS LP (SELF-TITLED) (Folkways Records FS 3822) Released 1959.
Early silver & blue Deep Groove Folkways label. Contains the informative illustrated booklet, which was written by Sam Charters, who also recorded this album in January 1959 in Houston. Album opens with "Penitentiary Blues." Fine, delectable album from the grandfather of Texas Blues. Old-style Folkways wrap-around outer jacket. Our copy came from the original owner, who took very good care of these albums. We will be listing more great blues rarities from this collection shortly. US mono pressing with 46th St. address on label. This copy has great visual appeal. The cover design reminds me of Andy Warhol's photo strips. Very fine reflective sheen on the grooves inside a nicely-preserved cover. Pressed on a thick heavy slab of wax (feels like 200 grams) with sturdy, high-quality cover. (Etched matrix: "FS 3822 A/B MK").
COVER - VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS
Cover has no seam splits, tape, ink spills, puncture holes, writing, bubbles or stickers. No ring wear. Flat cover with no bends, creases, waves or bowing. Small amount of corner banging. No speckling. Very little rubbing or scuffing. Spine is fully readable & has a few light marks. Booklet is in excellent condition with no creases or any other blemishes. Label looks quite nice: free of stains, marks, scuffs, cuts & writing. Sharp-cut hole with some faint transparent spindle brushings.
DISC - NEAR MINT
No scratches, skips, streaking, warping or residue on the disc or dead wax. Two or three faint, brief hairline flecks here and there. The disc still exudes a nice surface sheen. Free of chips, cracks & warping. The thick platter holds its sound better than a cheaper modern pressing.
