Here is the rare LP THE ROOSTER CROWED IN ENGLAND by SAM 'LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS. I acquired this along with a small collection of other Blues LPs from the same source at the same time; all dated from the late 50s/early 60s.

OK...here's the story, as far as I can ascertain, about this record after much research. These are often sold with the legend "Limited Edition - 99 Copies" printed on the label. I believe such copies are not authentic. But I am willing to stand corrected...

When this LP was originally pressed, it was issued in a run of (nominally) 99 copies solely for legal Tax-Avoidance purposes; any pressings greater than 99 copies meant a tax payment to the government. This was a common occurrrence in the UK in the '50s and '60s for small independent or private pressings. Bear in mind also that, in the 50s/60s, and as far as I'm aware, there were few, IF ANY, LPs issued that made any claims to be "Limited Editions" - I've never seen one in my thirty-odd years of collecting records. The 'limited edition' is a marketing ploy from the '70s and '80s designed to part people from their cash (despite these so-called 'limited editions' often being in the tens-of-thousands, and sometimes more).

There are several ways to determine authentic pressings that I know of. First of all, none has "Limited Edition - 99 Copies" printed on the label. Second, the text on the rear is properly typset, such that all the text is correctly aligned, as it should be. Thirdly, the text is INDENTED on the front and rear covers and not just printed on the surface. The sleeve is fully laminated front and back.

The presence of a 'flipback' cover is not, in itself, a guarantee of authenticity either (what's the easiest way to make a record sleeve look like it originated in the '50s? Give it a half-moon flipback of course!).

Furthermore, there are other factors. With this particular copy, there is light 'foxing' which is also indicative of age. Most authentically, it 'smells' its age (as do all the others I got at the same time). It's not a bad or unpleasant smell; it's just an 'old' and not new smell.

Check this LP on popsike.com and ask yourself this: if there were only 99 copies pressed over 50 years ago then how come so many have turned up? Why is the text not properly aligned on many of them? Compare it with, say, the Alexis Korner Blues from the Roundhouse LP from around the same time, also pressed in a run of 99 copies. Why so few of them but so many of the Lightnin' LP?

I've collected records for many years, since I was a bit bairn; but I make no claims to know everything about everything (or even anything). If you're an expert on this record/label/artist I am willing to stand corrected by all means and will eat humble pie if necessary. More importantly, I will refund any and all money spent by a buyer if it can be shown this is not authentic (or for ANY other reason).

The vinyl is clean but has some hairline marks and a few light scratches but nothing serious. It plays with some background crackle. I think this is a combination of it being one man singing acoustic Blues with only his guitar or piano as accompaniment , and the limitations of the original source material.

The labels are clean, with no rips, no writing, no stickers or sticker residue etc.

The fully-laminated sleeve has some light foxing here and there and there is a small area of laminate and surface 'lift' on the front near the bottom - see the photos!

The insert is a facsimile, as the original disappeared many years ago.
