This album was a genuine surprise at the time of its release, and remains so today. An effort to send Anthony Gourdine and company down the same road toward mainstream pop music being followed by Jackie Wilson and, to a degree, Sam Cooke, the surprise is that it actually worked with Little Anthony & the Imperials. In fact, this might be the most listenable album of its kind this side of The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart. Opening with a smooth rendition of Duke Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," Gourdine and the rest of the group show a genuine sympathy toward and understanding of the material, and the arrangements, if not exactly earth-shattering in their originality, are nicely in sync with the group and the repertory. "Undecided" could sound so ridiculously coy in the hands of almost any R&B group that it's almost a revelation here for being done "straight." Gourdine's powerful vocalizing at the end of "If You Are But a Dream" moves into Jackie Wilson territory in terms of its intensity, while "All or Nothing at All" is done in a playful, bouncy style. The group also milks "I'll Never Smile Again" for all of its pathos without ever getting near self-parody, and plunges successfully into a slow ballad mode on "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening" (which became their final End Records single). Gourdine explores the tougher, more soulful side of his singing on numbers like "Dream." None of this is what fans of "Tears on My Pillow" would be buying as a first choice (that's their other End album), but it's all amazingly good, valid music.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist (EXCEPT on a compact disc).

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A water stain  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)  affects the area about 4 square inches total; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about ½ x 2 inches in size)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent/tear) on the paper slick on the back side, bottom edge (NO part of the slick is missing)

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams (yet)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
