Description
You are bidding for a CLASSIC US 50'S FEMALE BLUES /R&B 78 RPM single by LITTLE ESTHER (PHILLIPS) called CHERRY WINE backed with LOVE OH LOVE issued on the FEDERAL record label in the US in 1953, cat number 12142 (GREEN AND SILVERTOP LABEL). The record is in excellent condition with excellent labels(there is some ringwear on one siode, and a small sticker tear) .The record has little wear with slight surface scuffs and few surface scratches and plays with no jumps and clicks and a minimum of surface noise. CLASSIC US BLUES AND SOUL / R&B from LITTLE ESTHER with two ROCKING SOULFUL BLUES tracks. LITLE ESTHER was discovered by JOHNNY OTIS as a young teenager and worked with him for many years. Her first hit record was "Double Crossing Blues", in 1950 for Savoy Records. "Mistrusting Blues", which went to number one that year, as did "Cupid Boogie". Other Phillips records that made it onto the U.S.R&B chart in 1950 include "Misery" (number 9), "Deceivin' Blues" (number 4), "Wedding Boogie" (number 6), and "Faraway Blues" (number 6). Few female artists, R&B or otherwise, had ever enjoyed such success in their debut year. Phillips left Otis and the Savoy label at the end of 1950 and signed with Federal Records. But just as quickly as the hits had started, they stopped. Although she recorded more than thirty sides for Federal, only one, "Ring-a-Ding-Doo", charted; the song made it to number 8 in 1952. Not working with Otis was part of her problem; the other part was her drug usage. By the middle of the decade Phillips was chronically addicted to drugs. LITTLE ESTHER ultimately got well enough to launch a comeback in 1962. Now billed as Esther Phillips instead of Little Esther, she recorded a country tune, "Release Me," . This went to number 1 R&B and number 8 on the pop listings. she continued to have drugs problems and was fighting addiction in and out of rehab, throughout her career until her death. . RARE in decent condition, from my own collection.
