LITTLE RICHARD
In 1952 !
Now here’s a record that goes right back to the very beginning with Little Richard. The first label to take note of Richard Penniman, was RCA, who signed him up in 1951 for what would be eight songs, four singles over the course of a year. This is the 4th of those releases and pairs the songs “Please Have Mercy On Me” and “I Brought It All On Myself.”
This is BEFORE his 1953-’54 releases for Peacock as the Deuces of Rhythm and Tempo Toppers
It was his second time in the studio when he cut this one, and the session was on January 12, 1952. The topside “Please Have Mercy On Me” is a great blues number, and quite different from his later shout records. He was a great admirer of Billy Wright and that’s where he’s coming from on this song.
The records from these sessions for RCA barely sold, and Little Richard probably never saw more than the $750 session fee for the dates.
