BEST OF Little Walter CHESS YEARS is the best blues harp player there ever was - period, bar none. His style, his tones, his solos were absolutely revolutionary and forever changed the landscape of blues harmonica. The man could make a tiny harmonica sound as big and versatile as a saxophone.
Marion Walter Jacobs' ascent to becoming one of the greatest exponents of the sound known as Chicago Blues began in 1951 when he became a fixed member of Muddy Waters' band. Two years later he rocketed to the top of the charts with the smash hit "Juke." From there, he established his own group and scored more hits like "My Babe." Along with his virtuoso technique and his love of experimenting with echo effects, Little Walter is noted for his clear, unfussed style which occasionally brings back memories of Louis Jordan's saxophone melodies, thereby taking up influences from popular jazz. This album covers the whole spectrum of his playing.
"Now we're talking...now we're talking! This IS the BLUES...It's a great pleasure to have this stunning album on quiet, 180 gram vinyl...The sound, in glorious mono, is to die for. There is nothing I can say other than buy it!" -

A SONIC WORK OF ART.
- LITTLE WALTER The Blues World Of Little Walter
With Baby Face Leroy Foster, J.B. Lenoir and Sunnyland Slim. Also Muddy Waters, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Ernest Big Crawford, Oliver Alcorn and Alfred Fat Man Wallace. Little Walter, just 19 at the time, cut these eight tracks for the short-lived Parkway label, with Muddy Waters as a sideman (and ensemble vocalist). These sides convinced Chess to record the full Waters band. We fill out the album with other sessions by Waters-connected artists to give a picture of the Chicago blues scene just before the Chess sound took over. Hours were spent cleaning up the disk-to-tapes of the Walter sides (which had been widely bootlegged with surface noise). The studio tapes of the other tracks were clean. Marvelous and historic music now available again on LP with the original cover painting by Jeanette Walzak and liner notes by Jim O'Neal.

High definition premium virgin vinyl pressing for super fidelity
Little Walter could make his harp sound like a tenor sax, he was instrumental in defining the sound that is now known as Chicago blues harp. Singer, composer, bandleader and peerless harmonica virtuoso, Little Walter was unquestionably the single finest blues artist to have been produced by the post war Chicago blues movement.
It was as a menber of, and a vital contributor to the Muddy Waters band that Walter was given full rein to stretch his wings, and it is a tribute to Muddy's foresight and generosity of spirit that he early recognized Walter's great talent and allowed him every opportunity and encouragement to develop it. Muddy's band was always a great incubator of blues talent and Walter's is easily the brightest jewel in the crown.
In the period 1952, when he struck out on his own, through 1968, when he died as the result of head injuries sustained in a fight, Walter recorded in all about 100 titles for the Chess label, of which slightly more than half were isssued on record, invariably as singles. Made up of songs cut between 1953 and 1959 — none of which had ever appeared on LP before the original 1974 release of this collection — this selection features Walter in his prime, playing alongside Robert Lockwood, Jr. and Louis Myers or Luther Tucker on guitar (with Muddy Waters present on slide on one indispensable track, "Rock Bottom"), mostly Willie Dixon on bass, and Fred Below on the drums, with Lafayette Leake or Otis Spann on piano. His harp work was never less than first rate during the era covered by this collection, and there are some top flight instrumentals featured, but the material (check out "Crazy Legs," with its dazzling interplay between Walter on harp and Louis and Dave Myers on guitars) here also features some of Walter's best singing, including the romantic "One More Chance with You," the quietly raunchy "Temperature," and "Confessin' the Blues."
