This guitarist and vocalist's real name was Barry Lyde. He was one of Australia's early guitar heroes performing with passion and power throughout the R'n'B, beat, psychedelic and progressive eras. He progressed through a number of bands - The Stilettos, Purple Hearts (1963-67), Wild Cherries (1967-68 and 1971), The Aztecs (1969-71), Coloured Balls (1972-74), Southern Electric and Rose Tattoo (1979-80). His only solo hit came with The Coloured Balls and was Liberate Rock in 1973. It just penetrated the Top 40 and spent eighteen weeks in the charts in all.

He recorded the Plays With George Guitar album at the start of 1971. He was assisted on it by former Fanny Adams' members Teddy Toi and Johnny Dick. The result is what is usually considered to be one of the finest hard rock albums of the era. It's full of his killer guitar riffs and fuzzed-out lead breaks on tracks like Dream, Evolution and George. Everybody Come Together sounded more a manifestation of the hippie dream.

In 1972 he recorded the Liberate Rock single before he formed The Coloured Balls. The flip side was a studio jam full of frantic guitar work from Loyde. After his spell with Coloured Balls, Loyde released a 45, the rocky Do You Believe In Magic? a souped up 12-bar blues offering, to launch his brief solo career. The flip contained a romantic ballad, Love Lost On Dream-tides, which showed he had a sensitive side. Shortly after its release he formed a new band Southern Electric.

He did some session work in the mid-seventies and, whilst in England, learnt how to produce records. Since a final album Live With Dubs on Mushroom in 1979, he's concentrated on producing emerging alternate bands.
