MBP as a genre is thought to have a mainly jubilant sound, but Brazilian singer-songwriter and composer Edu Lobo proves the emotional range of the style with Cantiga De Longe. While remaining honest to its bossa nova and samba roots, the album hears Lobo purposely melt the bare bones of the style into the background, producing a washy curtain of sentimental sound - drenching in reverberative mood, as on 'Zum-Zum' or - 'Feira De Santarem' - almost as if to lend bossa nova the drenchy quality of black metal. Now reissued over half a century after its original release, Lobo's best work returns to the forefront.
