Lonnie Johnson (born February 8, 1889?, New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.—died June 16, 1970, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) was a prolific American musician, singer, and songwriter who was one of the first major blues and jazz guitarists.
In his work during his first recording period, 1925–32, he was among the first guitarists to play single-string solos. His energy, swing, melodic ingenuity, and good taste were important elements in recordings by Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five, Duke Ellington, The Chocolate Dandies, McKinney’s Cotton Pickers, and King Oliver. He also recorded guitar solos and exceptional duets with the other major early jazz guitarist, Eddie Lang
Despite his urban style, Johnson’s blues also influenced rural performers, most notably Robert Johnson. Lonnie Johnson was an unusually gifted lyricist, his subject matter ranging from highly serious to amusing, as suggested by such songs as “Blue Ghost Blues” and “He’s a Jelly Roll Baker.”
After World War II, Johnson made the transition to rhythm and blues, recording for King in Cincinnati and having a hit in 1948 with "Tomorrow Night" written by Sam Coslow and Will Grosz. The song topped the Billboard Race Records chart for seven weeks and reached number 19 on the pop chart with sales of three million copies. A blues ballad with piano accompaniment and background singers, the song bore little resemblance to much of Johnson's earlier blues and jazz material. The follow-ups "Pleasing You", "So Tired", and "Confused" were also R&B hits.
