Blues & Ballads is a 1960 recording featuring Lonnie Johnson on vocals and electric guitar accompanied by Elmer Snowden on acoustic guitar and Wendell Marshall on bass. This was the first commercial recording by Snowden in 26 years. Guitarist-singer Lonnie Johnson was just starting a successful after giving up music and becoming janitor for the Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. Johnson teamed up with acoustic rhythm guitarist Elmer Snowden and bassist WendellMarshall. This, and its companion volume, are extraordinary examples of blues and early jazz. Johnson is masterful throughout. Elmer Snowden was the first leader of what became the Ellington band. Buy this yesterday.
This is an original Deep Groove MONO Pressing and is one of only four albums Lonnie Johnson recorded for Bluesville (1960-1963). Each and every one is a Blues Classic and this one may be the best of them all. The record has the name of Robert Van Gelder - chief engineer for Prestige Records - stamped 'RVG' on the deadwax runoff near the label on both sides. As with most original Prestige/Bluesville pressings, this album too has print on the spine slightly asymetrical (off-center). All these things make this LP unique as an original, authentic, first U.S. pressing and NOT A REISSUE, import, or counterfeit pressing.·This album has generally received high acclaim and is one of only four reissued recently by Acoustic Sounds.
THIS IS A ULTRA RARE ORIGINAL LP THAT HAS BEEN RARELY PLAYED IF EVER. The surfaces are bright and shiny with some barely visible lpaper scratches that do not sound. Mono LP's of this era often used inferior vinyl and occasional surface noise is to be expected and probably existed when the record was brand new. I doubt if you will find another copy of this quality on the market ANYWHERE! Unfortunately, since it is not perfect, this LP has been downgraded to NM-.The laminated cover (made out of thick American cardboard) is close to perfect with only minor signs of wear. There is light yellowing on the back side, apparently due to aging (nothing significant).There are no seam splits, corner dings, marks, stains, mold or mildew spots, tears, dents, writing, or price tickets. I suppose, due to it's age, I have to grade the cover as NM-. This record has been BOTH play graded and visually graded.
