Released in 195?, this is an original Jamaican pressing. Classic, extremely rare and hugely influential original Mento record on 78.
The first ever Trojan release and produced by the great Duke Reid!
Lord Power recorded more than a dozen tracks in the 1950s for Stanley Motta and Duke Reid. In the late 1960s, he recorded a few more for Bunny Lee (billed as Calypso Joe) and Coxsone Dodd.
Penny Reel, produced by Duke Reid, was released on a 78 RPM single in 1958 or 1959. It is said to be the very first release on Trojan . It's a wild and rollicking track (as was usually the case with Lord Power), set apart by the use of electric guitar. This song provided the best ska cover of a mento song, when Eric 'Monty' Morris recorded it for Treasure Isle in 1964.
Mento music is of huge historical importance and was vital to the emergence of Jamaican Ska and every subsequent form of Reggae music.
Here is a scan from a dedicated website with some more information on Mento music. I will use this scan for all of the Mento 78`s I have for auction.
It's a largely forgotten Jamaican music that is the grand pappy of reggae. For a ska or reggae fan, mento sounds familiar and exotic and unfamiliar. Mento recordings are difficult to come by, but worth seeking out. It's music that lifts my spirits and relaxes my mind whenever I hear it.
It wasn't until the early 1950s that true mento recordings first began to appear on 78 RPM discs. This decade was mento’s golden age, as a variety of artists recorded mento songs in an assortment of rhythms and styles. It was the peak of mento's creativity and popularity in Jamaica and the birth of Jamaica's recording industry.
These recordings reveal mento to be a diverse musical genre, sometimes played with reckless abandon and other times with orderly precision. In addition to mento's African and European roots, by this time, it had also encompassed pan-Caribbean influences, as well as from American jazz. Although it was informed by a world of music, mento is clearly, uniquely Jamaican. And as Jamaica's original music, all other Jamaican music can trace its roots to mento.
