WoW! This is for me what South American psychedelia is about! This record made me go there. I never knew garagey psychedelia could ever be so mindexpanding. Guaranteed to blast off your friend's ears at your psychedelic dance party.
Dig that killer opening track: vuelve a comenzar. Check it out on YOUTUBE. A 10 minutes epic that you just can't held your feet stand still with. Haunting rhythm. It starts with a disturbed scream that smoothly goes over into guitar and you just can't tell where the vocals end and where the guitars start. I wonder how they
ever managed to press so much energy into a slab of vinyl. Good thing CD didn't exist back then.
Pomping bass, ultra psychedelic guitars, spooky and wild screaming vocals, killer mouth harp and a very catchy rhythm do it all for me. I guess this song gives you the same rush DMT or STP does. Now I know why I'm collecting this kind of music.
The rest of the songs are also garagey psychedelia. Screaming vocals, wah wah guitars, doorsy intro's, swinging rhythms, etc. Everything you wish a rock album could have is here. On the B-side are a few (in comparision) slightly weaker tracks (like the Creedence cover 'Who'll stop the rain', although they manage to give it a psychedelic touch), but overall the standard is maintained. It's impossible to get over the climax of the opening track anyway.
This band used to be the backing band of a dull singer, and I guess when they finally could do their own thing, they really went berzerk..
Original Chilean pressing from 1973 (although the recordings were made in 1969) on the Odeon label (LDC-36809). Record and cover are in fair condition, but try to find this in any condition at all. The back is missing but I can supply a color xerox copy of my personal copy. This is one of the country's rarest releases (according to the dreams, fantasies and nightmares-book).

Los Amigos de María was one of the best hard rock bands of Chile. They were formed in the second half of the 60's and under the name Los Diferentes they released some singles more in the style of sof beat ballads than rock. They also become a backing band for others under the name Grupo Resurrección and Los Amigos de María, specially for the US singer Dean Reed who recorded some singles with, showing a new rock-styled vein. Finally they release a LP simply entitled "Rock" in 1973 which became one of the compulsory items for Chilean rock collectors thanks to the long original 10 minutes psych Zeppelin-styled masterpiece "Vuelve a comenzar". However, the rest of the album causes some disappointment for the covers of songs already out of time by the 70's. The repertoire wasn't good but, believe me, just for the first song "Vuelve a comenzar" this album worths the trying... Well, the myth says EMI released this album in 1973 but it was really recorded in 1968. If that information is true, then the disappointment wouldn't be justified, the opposite, it would be an advantaged proto hard rock. I don't know the truth, but I know everybody should know what a real hard rock band of Chile did those years. So far I know, like in most of the cases of Chilean rock bands of the 60´s, it's hard to find some information or pictures, so this time the video was created with pictures of some of the most legendary Chilean rock bands, a tribute to the bands which are forgotten in the collective memory but still alive in the mind and ears of the people who knows to honour the value of the past...
