Funky funky Lou Donaldson -- and one of the first albums to feature the tight drum work of Idris Muhammad behind Lou's horn -- so early, in fact, that Muhammad's listed here on the label as Leo Morris, which was his original name! The group also features Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and Lonnie Smith on organ -- and they all wail together in a sound that bridges the gap between Lou's earlier Blue Note soul jazz, and the later funky mode of his jazz funk years! Tracks include "The Humpback", "Peepin", "The Kid", and the fantastic cover of "Ode to Billie Joe" that's as much a sample cut as "Pot Belly"!

Lou Donaldson Hot Dog On Vinyl LP

From the title, to the cover, to the gritty grooves way down in the wax, this has got to be one of the funkiest Blue Note albums ever made. The set kicks off with a hard and heavy groove from the very first note thanks to some super-tight drumming by a young Idris Muhammad who was already hitting the kit with that snapping post-Popcorn style that would revolutionize funky jazz in years to come! Donaldson smokes on electrified alto sax here and he plays with that great mix of flatness and echo that you'd hear in Eddie Harris' albums of the same time. The rest of the lineup is equally as impressive, with Melvin Sparks on guitar, Charles Earland on organ and Ed Williams blasting away on funky trumpet! Titles include killer remakes of "It's Your Thing" and "Who's Making Love" plus Donaldson originals "Hot Dog" and "Turtle Walk,"  all nice and long and with a really raw sound!

Lou Donaldson Everything I Play Is Funky On Vinyl LP

Everything I Play Is Funky is easily one of the best examples of Lou Donaldson's commercially accessible period of the late '60s and early '70s and the grooves here are consistently limber and unforced. The Lee Dorsey-sung, Allen Toussaint-penned "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (From Now On)" kicks off an entertaining program also highlighted by three Donaldson originals, the cooking funk number "Donkey Walk," which seems to inspire the fieriest solos on the record, the cheery calypso "West Indian Daddy," and the hard bop-flavored "Minor Bash." There's also a version of "Over the Rainbow" done in Donaldson's caressing, melodic ballad style, and the simple funk vamp "Hamp's Hump." It's a nicely varied assortment, all anchored by the percolating rhythm section of guitarist Melvin Sparks, bassist Jimmy Lewis, and drummer Idris Muhammad (Charles Earland and Dr. Lonnie Smith switch off on organ, and Blue Mitchell and Eddie Williams do the same on trumpet). This is the sort of record that modern-day Donaldson disciples cherish, and one of his few truly consistent efforts in this style. Recommended wholeheartedly to funk and rare-groove fans.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 22, 1969 and January 9, 1970. Originally released on Blue Note (84337). Includes liner notes by Glenn E. Thompkins. This is part of Blue Note's Rare Groove series.

Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson -- and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad -- who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note -- a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar -- and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder".
