Lou Reed's SET THE TWILIGHT REELING casts aside the gloomfest of his death-and-reflection trilogy to reexamine life under the glow of love; as he tells the listener in "Trade In," Reed wants a "14th chance at this life."That Lou--he's been around. Maybe that's why TWILIGHT's 11 surprisingly poppy and sweet songs are so refreshing. It's a side of Lou that most haven't seen since he made his tender side known on TRANSFORMER's "Andy's Chest." Opening with the nostalgic bliss of "Egg Cream" and moving into the love-struck giddiness of "Hooky Wooky," SET THE TWILIGHT REELING seems like a peek at a new man. He even sounds different. The guitar tones are dreamier--"The Proposition" lifts some of old sideman Robert Quine's best melodic tricks and the title track boasts Hendrix-ian guitar strokes. Still more enticing, it sounds like Lou, every note.
